sport cricket international theashes 8182167 ----- # The Ashes 2010: Australian media reaction to England's dominance in Adelaide ## Australia's bowlers have received widespread criticism from their national media after rain brings play to a premature end on day three of the second Test. ![][1] Crumbling: Australian media has welcomed the arrival of rain saying it is the side's only chance to turn the second Test around Photo: ACTION IMAGES By Telegraph staff 11:00AM GMT 05 Dec 2010 [Comments][2] [**Sydney Morning Herald: Can't bat, can't bowl and now we can't field**][3] **Jesse Hogan:** Batting and bowling talent were key factors in Australia becoming the dominant Test team of the past 20 years. So, too, was fielding. Australia's uncharacteristic struggles with bat and ball of late have been well documented but, based on this Ashes series so far, the malaise has also infected the fielding. Brad Haddin's spill behind the wicket yesterday of Jonathan Trott shortly before tea was the 11th chance Australia squandered in seven days of cricket against England. In Brisbane, Trott was twice dropped by Michael Clarke, on 34 and then 75, on the way to his unbeaten 135. Clarke deserved credit for getting a hand to the first chance, at point, but the second, at slip, should have been a cinch for any international cricketer. Haddin's spill was not as costly as the others - Trott made only two more - but it was symptomatic of Australia failing to take half- chances, as Trott did on the fourth ball of day one when he threw down the stumps from side-on. ## Related Articles * [Pietersen: I'm through the bad times][4] 05 Dec 2010 * [Pietersen plays fine game of patience][5] 04 Dec 2010 * [Day three highlights][6] 05 Dec 2010 * [The Ashes 2010: live][7] 04 Dec 2010 * [KP is back... and back with a bang][8] 05 Dec 2010 * [Ponting: England taught us lesson][9] 05 Dec 2010 [**The Australian: heat on Australia's faulting campaign**][10] **Andrew Faulkner:** Australia is hoping the rain that halted play in the in Adelaide continues for the next two days so it can reset and start again in Perth. The forecast for tomorrow is a shower or two with a chance of a thunderstorm. By the time rain prevented any play after tea, Kevin Pietersen had passed 200 and the England lead in this second Ashes Test had blown out to 306 after Australia managed just two wickets in the two sessions of play today. Adding to Australia's woes, opening batsman Simon Katich has been hobbling about the field suffering from an apparent achilles injury. Pietersen brought up his double century 20 minutes before tea with a sharp single to mid-off then launched into a passable Elvis impression, going down on one knee and pumping a clenched glove. Australia's tactic of bouncing Pietersen was proving an embarrassing failure. [**Sydney Morning Herald: Relaxed England feast on runs as bowlers wilt in heat **][11] **Jamie Pandaram:** No question the batsmen made it onerous, but the latest instalment of Australia's bowling attack have fared no better than their predecessors in Brisbane. So where to for the selectors from here? Is there any combination of bowlers that can take 20 England wickets this summer? It looks unlikely at the going rate. England's bowlers managed 10 wickets in a day; Australia will be lucky to take the same amount in three following yesterday's exhausting and largely fruitless campaign in suffocating heat. England are exposing the hosts' weaknesses and hiding their own very well. And a major Australian weakness now seeing the sunlight is a lack of wicket-taking strike power on flat decks. [**Herald Sun: Big wet Australia's only hope in second Ashes Test **][12] **Will Swanton: **Scoreboards are the revealers of truth. Australia has played six front-line bowlers in the opening Ashes Tests and they've been slapped across the face with the collective figures of 5-1068 from just two innings. Sometimes the truth is too ugly for words. Sometimes words aren't required. Just look at the numbers. England was 4-551 - a lead of 306 runs - when the heavens opened. Australia got what it needed. Rain, and lots of it. The first drops fell at 2.45pm. The covers came out at tea and stayed there. The series is in limbo [but] England could retain the Ashes with wins in Adelaide and Perth. [**The Western Australian - England onslaught held up by rain**][13] **Daniel Brettig: **Australia's players seem convinced the heavens offer their only hope of salvation even as their captain Ricky Ponting was imploring his men to conjure an escape from the dreadfully mismatched second Ashes Test. Rain had done what Australia seemed incapable of doing by stopping the England innings on their tea total of 4-551, an overall lead of 306.
