The wide expanses of the Highlands provide ideal breeding grounds for the insects, which are particularly prevalent in the last weeks of May and start of June, and middle of July though to the end of August. Peak times of the day for the insects are early morning and evening. Bites can cause spots, itching and swelling. The are 37 different types of the Culicoides species of midge in Scotland. The most common is Culicoides impunctus, which prefers taking blood from large mammals, such as cattle, but also preys on humans. Visitors should wear repellent and try to cover their arms and legs. Scientists are testing oil from the Neem tree, found in India, as a potential repellent.
