He denies the charges. In the US, which is the IMF's biggest shareholder, Mr Geithner said Mr Strauss-Kahn is not in a position to run the International Monetary Fund and said the board needed to "formally put in place for an interim period somebody to act as managing director". The 24-strong board of member countries has the authority to remove Mr Strauss-Kahn from his post, and [**countries are already vying for position in the battle for the top job**][3]. Mr Strauss-Kahn's arrest has thrown the IMF into turmoil just as it is playing a key role in helping euro zone states like Greece and Portugal tackle debt woes.
