The one-of-a-kind paintings showcase the pitter-patter of the Magellanic and
Rockhopper penguins, with all proceeds from the paintings going to the
aquarium's education and conservation programmes.
The Aquarium claims the venture into the art world is good for the penguins
themselves, helping to strengthen their cognitive abilities.
"Painting is one of the various enrichment activities that perform a vital
role in providing varied mental stimulation for the animals," said Ken
Ramirez, Shedd's executive vice president of animal collections and training.
"The health and wellness of our animals is the top priority at Shedd, and
enrichment activities are a consistent part of Shedd's commitment to provide
world-class animal care."
From December 22, 30 penguin-made pieces will available for purchase at the
aquarium's gift shop.
Each 16 x 20 painting is set in a 2-inch black frame and includes a biography
of the penguin artist, including the name and information about the penguin
that created the painting.
