# Terrorist alert on mainland over Queen's visit to Dublin
## Britain has been put on high alert after dissident Irish republicans
claimed they had planted a bomb in central London in protest at the Queen's
historic visit to Dublin.

Scotland Yard received a coded alert that a device had been planted in the
capital without identifying a location or a time for the attack, sources told
the Daily Telegraph.
The warning, which used an agreed code-word, was received on Sunday evening
and has already resulted in the closure of areas around Buckingham Palace and
Trafalgar Square after two separate alerts.
A spokesman for Scotland Yard said "all officers have been advised to be a
highly vigilant to ensure the safety of London."
They advised Londoners to "continue to go about their business as usual" but
added: "We encourage the public to remain vigilant and report any information
about unusual activity or behaviour which may be terrorist-related to the
confidential Anti-Terrorist Hotline."
**[The Queen's][3]** four-day visit, which begins on Tuesday, will be the
first by a British monarch for 100 years.

In the first alert in London, police officers searching the Mall, which leads
from Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace, came across a loose manhole cover
at 4.30am.
The Metropolitan Police Marine Support Unit was called in and divers sent into
the sewers before the all-clear was given seven hours later.
Search dogs were also used and more than ten emergency response vehicles,
including police cars and ambulances stood ready as the searches were
underway.
In the second incident a suspicious package, thought to be a suitcase, was
found abandoned outside a hotel in Northumberland Avenue at around 9.30am.
The bomb squad was called and used a remote controlled robot to investigate
and then conduct a controlled explosion on the case, which was found to be
"non-suspicious."
An attempted break in was also reported at Carlton House Terrace close to the
Foreign Secretary's residence at around 4.20am.
The threat level from Irish-related terrorism remains at substantial meaning
that an attack is a strong possibility.
The threat level was raised in September last year after intelligence
suggested that dissidents had the capability to operate in mainland Britain.
A Home Office spokesman said: "We face a real and serious threat from
terrorism. There is a continuing need for vigilance and the public should
report any suspicious activity to the police."
The alert came as Dublin imposed an unprecedented £20m security operation for
the four-day visit.
The centre of Dublin has become a vehicle-free zone to prevent terrorist car
bombs as a parking ban was enforced in more than 50 streets in the centre of
the capital.
More than 8,000 policemen and 2,000 soldiers will flood Dublin in what will be
by far the biggest security operation Ireland has ever seen.
Ireland's Defence Forces are on such a high state of alert that an air defence
"umbrella" of missiles and guns will be in place to protect the Baldonnel
military air base where the royal flight will land, while armoured vehicles
will be deployed in Dublin.
The visit, which came at the invitation of President Mary McAleese, is seen as
a key milestone in the peace process which began with the 1998 Good Friday
agreement.
The Queen's itinerary will include a wreath-laying ceremony at a Garden of
Remembrance for "those who died in the cause of Irish freedom", and a visit to
Croke Park stadium, where British troops opened fire at a Gaelic football
match in 1920, killing 14 people.
But the Real IRA has described the Queen as a "war criminal" during a
commemoration of the 1916 Easter Rising last month.
Marian Price, who was convicted of bombing the Old Bailey in 1973, appeared
alongside a masked member of the Real IRA at the ceremony, and was later
arrested.
She was sent back to prison on Monday after her licence was revoked, accused
of encouraging support for an illegal organisation - the 32 County Sovereignty
Movement.
In recent weeks police in Northern Ireland have discovered two separate hauls
of bomb-making equipment along with a weapons cache in a vehicle in south
Armagh.
The finds came three weeks after the murder of PC Ronan Kerr by republican
dissidents in Omagh, County Tyrone.
