_Doctor Who_'s Matt Smith will be up against former Bafta Television Award
winner Jim Broadbent in the Leading Actor category, it was announced today.
Smith was an unheralded choice when picked in January 2011 to become the
eleventh Doctor in the science-fiction series, replacing David Tennant. At
just 26, he became the youngest actor to play the role.
He faces stiff competition for the award. _Sherlock Homes _(BBC One) star
Benedict Cumberbatch is also nominated, alongside Daniel Rigby, who played
comic Eric Morecambe in _Eric and Ernie_ (BBC Four). Jim Broadbent is
recognised for his role in Channel 4 drama series _Any Human Heart_.

_Doctor Who_, which returned to television screens for a new series last
Saturday, is not nominated in any other category. By contrast, _Sherlock_
(Martin Freeman, Best Supporting Actor) and _Any Human Heart_ (Gillian
Anderson, Best Supporting Actress) each received a second nomination.
Known formally as the Phillips British Academy Television Awards, the high
profile awards have honoured excellence on the small screen since 1954. This
year's ceremony will take place on Sunday 22 May at Grosvenor House in London
and will be hosted by Graham Norton.
Other notable nominees include Anna Maxwell Martin (Leading Actress, _South
Riding_), Steve Coogan (Male Performance in a Comedy Programme, _The Trip_)
and Stephen Fry (Entertainment Performance, _QI_). BBC Four drama _The Road To
Coronation Street_ is up for two gongs, with Lynda Baron and Jessie Wallace
going head to head in the Supporting Actress category.
BBC One leads the nominations by channel, with 24, ahead of Channel 4, 16, and
BBC Two, 14.
Last year's winners included Kenneth Branagh (Leading Actor, _Wallander_) and
Julie Walters (Leading Actress, _Mo_).
