Painter, sculptor, architect, landscape artist, urban designer,
environmentalist; Cesar Manrique is not an easy man to categorise, so
extensive were his talents. But his status as a cultural icon and Lanzarote's
most famous son is certainly assured.
Manrique's buildings, monuments and interiors can be seen all over the Canary
Islands. His extraordinary vision in fusing the textures, colours and natural
forms of volcanic landscapes into a harmonious whole created a body of work
that now ranks among the top cultural attractions to the islands.
On Lanzarote, these include the Jameos del Agua lava tube, the Mirador del
Rio, the Casa Museo del Campesino and Monument, the Jardin de Cactus and
finally the Cesar Manrique Foundation itself, located in the artist's former
home created inside the bubbles of a lava field.
But as well as his physical legacy, Manrique was a seminal influence in
guiding the rapid development - caused by the explosion of tourism - in a
regulated, sustainable direction. It is largely down to him that Lanzarote,
and protected areas of the larger islands, now have planning regulations that
prohibit high-rise hotels and retain traditional colours and styles.
Cesar Manrique Cabrera was born on April 24,1919, in Arrecife, Lanzarote, and
spent much of his childhood in Caleta de Famara in a house by the ocean.

After studying art in Madrid, in 1964 he travelled to New York where he met,
among many others, Andy Warhol. A number of successful exhibitions followed,
but Manrique began to see life in the Big Apple as ultimately artificial and
yearned to return to Lanzarote. 'When I returned from New York, I came with
the intention of turning my native island into one of the more beautiful
places on the planet, due to the endless possibilities that Lanzarote had to
offer,' he wrote later.
It was an ambition he triumphantly fulfilled.
