# Canary Islands - activities: the great outdoors
## Whether it's walking, golf, watersports or getting back to nature, the
Canary Islands are perfect for visitors who want to get up and enjoy the great
outdoors.

While a tropical climate and year-round sun may be at the core of the appeal
of these islands, an increasing number of visitors are attracted by the many
and various opportunities for a wide range of outdoor activities and adventure
sports.
**Walking**
Every conceivable type of volcanic landscape is waiting to be explored, from
the iconic hike to the summit of Mount Teide on Tenerife to the 620-mile
spider's web of footpaths that criss-cross La Palma. These days, most of the
footpaths are well signed (even on the smaller islands) and the facilities for
walkers, from mountain huts to luxury accommodation, are excellent.
Knowledgeable walking guides are also readily available for hire. Picking out
individual walks can be a hostage to fortune, but the epic Ruta de los
Volcanes on La Palma, a tough six-hour walk along an active volcanic ridge
ending at the coast at Faro de Fuencaliente, and the steep but hugely
rewarding Camino de Jinama overlooking the Valle de Golfo on El Hierro, come
highly recommended.
**Watersports **

While the crystal-clear waters of the islands are a haven for swimmers and
snorkelers, they are also renowned for the quality of their diving: expect
everything from wrecks to an often surreal underwater landscape of volcanic
caves, tunnels and ocean walls, and excellent visibility - often up to 100ft.
The Sotavento lagoon in the south-east of Fuerteventura has also become world
famous among the windsurfing and kiteboarding fraternity, with World Tour
events held here every year.
**Golf **
Gran Canaria is headquarters for visiting golfers, boasting eight of Spain's
most impressive courses, including its oldest - the Real Club de Golf, founded
in 1891. There are another seven courses to choose from on Tenerife, with one
each on Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Gomera.
**Whale and Dolphin Watching**
The waters between the west coast of Tenerife and neighbouring La Gomera are
famous for spotting dolphins and whales, in particular short-finned pilot,
sperm and beaked whales.
