# Retracing the Camino, the pilgrim path to Santiago: day one
|
|

## In 1999 The Telegraph's Derek Bishton became one of more than 100,000
|
|
people a year who walk the Camino - the route across Northern Spain to the
|
|
shrine of St James in Santiago de Compostela that pilgrims have been following
|
|
for more than a thousand years. Ten years on, he retraces his journey.

His original pilgrimage took 31 days during which time he stayed mostly in
|
|
pilgrim hostels with his world packed into a rucksack.
|
|
|
|
This time he retraces his journey by road with the luxury of five star
|
|
accommodation. His challenge: to complete the journey in three days, while
|
|
still capturing the most memorable locations and the feelings they evoke.
|
|

On day one he travelled from Pamplona to San Juan de Ortega.
