Ibiza's festivals are both important cultural events and a great excuse for a
street party.

Ibiza's fiestas are colourful, joyous occasions, often with spectacular
firework displays and street parties that take over an entire town.
A great excuse for a knees-up, they are also important cultural events that
celebrate saints' days or recall landmarks in the island's history.
In addition, they commemorate the traditional craft skills, rituals and dances
that are such an integral part of island culture.
**Santa Eularia **
Held every year on the first Sunday in May, this festival is one of the
island's oldest. It celebrates the narrow escape of the town of Santa
Eularia's parishioners when their church collapsed into the sea back in the
mists of time. One of the highlights is the procession of horse and carts
decorated with spectacular floral displays.
**Sant Joan**
This is one of the most popular fiestas, which extends over several days
surrounding the summer solstice. Evolving from roots as a pagan festival, the
bonfires and fire dances held on June 24 are central to the event, with
participants throwing something old into the fire to symbolically make way for
the new. Partying and dancing continues into the small hours.
** **
**Fiesta Del Carmen **
Dedicated to the patron saint of seafarers, this fiesta is popular throughout
Spain but, for obvious reasons, particularly on Ibiza. Parades in Es Cubells
and Portinatx are followed by the main event of the day when a statue of the
Virgin is carried through the streets by the island's fishermen and placed in
a boat, which then leads a colourful flotilla of vessels around the harbour.
** **
**Festes de la Terra**
During the first eight days of August, Ibiza Old Town becomes the focus of
attention for the whole island, with street music and performances in the main
squares. Traditional religious events include the Day of the Virgin (Aug 5)
and Sant Ciriac (Aug 8) - the latter marking the Catalan conquest of the
island from the Moors in 1235 with traditional dancing (ball pages) - while
watermelon eating forms part of the celebration in Es Soto.
