## Ibiza has a rich cultural heritage, and today's islanders are working hard
to keep the old ways alive by celebrating their traditional clothes, music and
dances.

Ibiza is an island whose people have traditionally worked the land and lived
from it as communications and transport were not as easy as nowadays. This
lead to their very own customs and ways of dealing with life.
These days there is a strong interest in keeping these traditions alive. The
Federacio de Colles de Ball i Cultura Popular is a group that tries to
encourage young people to learn from those who grew up having to make their
own clothes, shoes, musical instruments, utensils, and other items.
There are workshops were all these skills can be learnt. People find out about
the history of the island and feel proud of their roots. They use materials
that can be found in the island, different types of wood, plants, wool are
used to make baskets, hats, blinds, flutes, castanets, drums, etc. It takes
lots of time, work and skill to make these traditional items that sometimes
are proudly shown in public fairs and displays.
Apart from the crafts, one of the main interests of the Federacio de Colles de
Ball i Cultura Popular is to keep the unique Ibizan music and dances alive.
These dances are courting dances, and their origin seems to date back to
Medieval times. From what is known the dances were held in the old days at the
Patron Saints festivities of each village, at festivities celebrated at wells
and springs, and at family celebrations at home.

There are several types of dances:
* La curta - The short dance. Traditionally it was carried out by the hosts
of the festivity, who are usually also the oldest people. It is a slow and
measured dance.
* La llarga - The long dance. It is faster and more vigorous, specially for
the men.
* Dotze rodades - the twelve turns. It is a more ritualized dance, in honour
of couples that had recently got married. At the end of the dance the other
members of the group join the dancing couple and all dance to the rhythm of
the llarga.
* Sa filera - The line dance. A man dances with several women.
Traditional costumes are also important in the Ibizan heritage and are proudly
preserved and kept.
Women wear beautiful dresses:
* Black Dress called "Gonella negra": The oldest dress model. The exact
origin is unknown, but it shows some medieval characteristics. It was in use
until the first half of the eighteenth century. It is a black woven woollen
dress with small pleats at the back, adjusted to the body. The accompanying
jewelry is made of silver and coral.
* White Dress called "Gonella blanca": It is made out of thin white cotton
material. From a historical point of view, it replaces the previous model and
was used until the early twentieth century. The jewellery the young women wear
from then on is made of gold. Formerly these jewels were a sign of family
wealth. The set of rings called "s'anellada" were traditionally a gift of the
young women's suitor, once they had become engaged.
* Coloured Dress called "Gonella de color": This other dress is very similar
to the previous one, but made of different fabrics and colours, appearing in
later times. It should be noted that even today there are Ibizan women who
continue to use this dress.
Men wear suits:
* The oldest type was inspired by a old military uniform, and consists of
jacket and trousers of the same fabric as the "Black Gonella", a vest with
decorative silver buttons, white shirt, and on the head a cap called
"barretina" (usually red and black back) is worn.
* Then a white model appeared, which could be of a heavy fabric, called
"drap", made with linen or cotton with hand embroidered decoration. The black
vest carried on being used but the decorative buttons became larger. The
traditional cap is still used as well.
* The last model that appeared is known as a "camisole", and consists of
trousers and a black shirt. The cap or "barretina" is replaced by a black hat.
The shoes they wear are called called "espardenyes", and they are hand made.
The main musical instruments that appear in celebrations are:
* Castanets that are made of juniper.
* Drums, dating back to medieval times, and made of pine.
* Flute, also of medieval origin, made from oleander.
* Espasi, a metallic instrument in the form of a sword.
