Legendary may be an overused word, but no other description seems appropriate
when it comes to the island institution that is Las Dalias. Hippy market, art
gallery, bar, restaurant and rock venue, and much else besides - over the
years Las Dalias has attracted rock gods from Mick Jagger to Brian May and
Jimmy Page along with, in high summer, as many as 10,000 a week of us lesser
mortals.
It all began in 1954, when Juan Mari - a local farmer-cum-carpenter in the
town of Sant Carles, in the north-east of the island - opened a bar and dance
hall that he had built himself on land he had recently bought. Despite the
protestations of the local priest, who in those days held considerable power,
Las Dalias thrived. In the Sixties, when the first tour operators arrived, Las
Dalias responded with flamenco and barbecue nights. A lull in the Seventies
was followed by an injection of new life a decade later, when Juanito, Juan's
son, took over the reins and began the Saturday hippy market. Over the years
this has become a more authentic version of the original Es Canar market,
which takes place on Wednesdays (April to October) in the nearby coastal
resort.
Today Las Dalias is a vividly colourful mix of craft, food and music stalls.
Family friendly, it also remains rooted in its original Eastern vibe. It's as
if the island's hippies have all grown up, had a good bath and produced some
surprisingly well-behaved children along the way.
At the centre of it all, Juanito and Juan (now 83) are still running the show.
'My father still orders everyone around just like he did 20 years ago,'
Juanito told me, 'and he still grows vegetables to sell on market day which
was the reason he bought the land in the first place.'
He remembers when San Carles had no electricity and the day Bob Marley and his
entourage rolled into town. He is understandably proud of the huge success of
Las Dalias. 'On the one side you have the hippies and on the other you have
the islanders themselves. I am Ibicenco. I am proud of our traditions. Las
Dalias brings the two together. It's the true heart of our island.'
