I've been on the island a few days but still haven't shed my city ways.
|
|
Rushing from place to place, I am trying to pack in too much. Why come to
|
|
Ibiza in the first place, I ask myself, if you are unable to master the
|
|
deceptively difficult art of relaxation?
|
|
|
|
Lucas, my host at** [Can Lluc][2]**, spots my problem at once and suggests I
|
|
book a yoga lesson in the hotel's new spa. Estefania Madrid, the hotel's yoga
|
|
teacher, trained in London before moving to India, where she worked with some
|
|
of the world's top yoga masters in Rishikesh, Mumbai, Pune and Goa.
|
|
|
|
When I arrive back in the evening for my lesson, I'm all in a fluster once
|
|
more. I am 15 minutes late and don't want to keep Estefania waiting. Far from
|
|
being annoyed, she smiles and asks whether I have ever practised yoga before.
|
|
She makes it sound as natural as eating and sleeping and I feel rather
|
|
sheepish when I admit that I haven't.
|
|
|
|
It's a beautiful evening and we lay out our yoga mats in a garden, where a
|
|
hammock is strung up between two trees. "You must learn to slow down,"
|
|
Estefania tells me. "Your mind and your body are running too fast. I think
|
|
some yoga would be good for you."
|
|
|
|
Describing the next hour is not easy. To a man who has spent a lifetime
|
|
working out in a gym, yoga is like exercise in reverse. Instead of straining,
|
|
Estefania teaches my body to become connected to the ground and to extend
|
|
itself in the most natural way possible.
|
|

I also discover that I have never learnt to breathe properly. At first it is
|
|
surprisingly difficult as I become conscious of how much stress I've been
|
|
holding in without even realising it.
|
|
|
|
As my body begins to balance itself, my mind begins to calm and for the first
|
|
time in a long while I feel in total harmony with my surroundings. The
|
|
experience feels semi-miraculous. I realise that only now have I truly arrived
|
|
on Ibiza.
