Even the most familiar landscapes seem different when viewed from an
|
|
alternative angle. Exploring by kayak the underbelly of the Ibizan coastline,
|
|
with its caves, gullies, nooks, crannies and cliffs, is like discovering a new
|
|
world.
|
|
|
|
I arrange to meet my guide, Paulo, on the beach at Cala d'Hort in the far
|
|
south-west of the island, looking out towards the mystical island of Es Vedra.
|
|
The subject of many legends and rumoured to have a strange effect on compasses
|
|
and electronic gadgets, this is Ibiza's very own Bermuda Triangle.
|
|
|
|
Kayaks are an excellent way of getting close to nature and modern versions are
|
|
safe and very stable, even for the beginner.
|
|
|
|
I was hoping we might be able to paddle out to Es Vedra and examine its
|
|
mysteries up close, but an offshore wind is whipping up some white horses, so
|
|
it's not to be. No matter. Instead we stick close to the coastline and head
|
|
off in calm waters around the headland.
|
|
|
|
Primary colours and sensations are what kayaking is all about. With an all-
|
|
embracing canopy of blue above and the sea just inches below, the sweep,
|
|
surge, glide and gurgle of our kayaks has a mesmerising effect.

Within just a few minutes, we have paddled out of sight of the beach and
|
|
around the headland to view Torre d'es Savinar, one of 15 lookout towers that
|
|
were built all around the island in the late 18th century to warn the
|
|
islanders against pirate attack.
|
|
|
|
Suddenly, a shadow passes beneath us like a cloud covering the sun. Paulo
|
|
laughs. "Sometimes when I take children out, they get afraid because of this
|
|
mysterious dark stain that seems to cover the white sand," he says. "I have to
|
|
tell them it's just Neptune grass… nothing to worry about.
|
|
|
|
"In fact, it's a sign of how pure the seas around the island are and Ibiza has
|
|
the largest colony in the entire Mediterranean. A few years ago, scientists
|
|
discovered one colony with strands nearly five miles long that is thought to
|
|
be up to 100,000 years old, making it the oldest living organism in the
|
|
world."
|
|
|
|
Just an hour with Paulo and I'm hooked. Next time, I shall have to sign up for
|
|
the full five-day circumnavigation of the island. Now that really would be
|
|
something!
