Ibiza Old Town and its central fortress, Dalt Vila, should be top of the list
|
|
of must-see cultural attractions for any visitor to Ibiza. Every civilisation
|
|
that has controlled the island, from the first Phoenician settlers to the
|
|
Romans and later the warring caliphates and kingdoms of Muslim and Christian
|
|
Spain, have left their mark.
|
|
|
|
The island capital's cathedral and fortified walls can be seen from many miles
|
|
inland and a walk through its maze of ancient streets is to soak up the
|
|
atmosphere of centuries of history.
|
|
|
|
Many of Ibiza's most important buildings, museums and cultural attractions are
|
|
to be found here. Now, after the city has enjoyed more than a decade of Unesco
|
|
World Heritage status, on Friday evenings during the summer many of the
|
|
museums will be open until late with free admission.
|
|
|
|
Known as Noches Blancas or White Nights, the idea is to highlight the
|
|
importance and accessibility of Dalt Vila's cultural life. Each Friday the
|
|
programme begins at 8pm and continues until 1am.
|
|
|
|
A series of free concerts and other cultural events will also be held in some
|
|
of the most important buildings. Among the highlights are the Museu Puget,
|
|
which, located in the 18th-century Casa Comasena palace, is hosting works from
|
|
father-and-son Ibizan painters; and the Yabisa Madina, an interpretation
|
|
centre where an interactive display brings alive the era of Moorish control of
|
|
the island.

Of particular interest is the explanation of the evolution of the city walls -
|
|
the best preserved in the Mediterranean - which are part of the museum
|
|
building.
|
|
|
|
Nearby, the Diocesan Museum contains paintings, carvings and other relics as
|
|
well as a collection of Ibizan jewellery, while the Archaeological Museum
|
|
features artefacts covering a 3,000-year period.
|
|
|
|
Concerts, poetry readings, lectures and exhibitions are also being held in the
|
|
s'Alamera Cultural Centre, while the cathedral will host a series of concerts
|
|
of classical and sacred music.
|
|
|
|
Open air concerts can be enjoyed at the Baluard de Sant Pere under the city
|
|
walls every Friday at 9.30pm in high summer, with a display of traditional
|
|
Ibizan folk dancing.
|
|
|
|
It's this rewarding variety of culture and history that is perhaps the most
|
|
surprising aspect of Ibiza.
