# A local's review of modern day Ibiza
## A medieval to modern transformation of Ibiza in the eyes of the locals.
![Ibiza][1]
By By Maria Mari 4:13PM BST 27 Aug 2010
Everything has already been said about Ibiza. Its beauties have been sung all
over Europe in all kinds of media, and its different aspects exposed according
to our visitors idiosyncrasies. Maybe what is less known is how people who
live here feel about the changes in the last 50 years. Many middle aged people
today have seen two completely different Ibizas: a Medieval one and an
international, modern, multicultural and even ultra libertine one that, when
you think of it, makes your eyes wobble and your head go round but,
extraordinarily enough, our Ibiza still survives with an acceptable degree of
sanity in our locals.
We see three Ibizas, all mingled in such or small piece of land that, if we
pay attention to one, we forget the others are just next to it. A careful
observer will distinguish the tourists, the hippies and residents of other
countries and the locals, who are often taken as equals of those who come from
the mainland to work in tourism, but have a culture all their own and don't
quite mix.
**Tourists**
Where there was a beach, and there are many, a holiday complex grew, with all
the conveniences to make a holiday complete. Here is the working place for
locals and mainlanders. After our shift we run away from it. A ten minute ride
will take us out of this stressful place into the country where most locals
live a peaceful life with their backs to the sea and the tourists.

**Hippies**
The philosophy is there but today's hippies have not much to do with those of
the 60s. They mostly are handicraftsmen, or rather families, who wear
colourful clothes of their own fashion, live in old farmhouses and really are
the ones who live this "magic" of the island so envied in the hectic world.
Locals like this very much and think of them as the most attractive
neighbours. Together with the young families of the Ibicencos, they keep the
culture alive with concerts, art exhibitions, theatre, cinema contest and
gatherings of all sorts; they really are the salt and pepper of the markets
all over the island and surely make our lives brighter.
**Locals**
From all these miscellaneous ways of living and cultures, the real Ibicencos
have learned a lot and have made big improvements in their well-being;
adaptation is the devise. Live and let live, but don't forget who you are;
make the most of it during the Summer season and wait till Winter comes. Then
we can relax, meet with our friends, celebrate our traditions and festivities,
study something useful, restore our homes, sow our fields, maybe go on holiday
ourselves, and keep our fingers crossed that we will have a good season next
Summer, our visitors will come again. Despite all, they are our living and,
though some are very noisy and rude the large majority are nice people who
have worked very hard for 11 months in their cold countries, under severe
control of timetables, trains, early mornings and rain. Let them enjoy
themselves for a fortnight, let their hair down and charge their batteries
with our sun and sea, of which we have such abundance. Be welcome to Ibiza!
