# Ibiza - Beyond the nightclubs
## There's more to Ibiza than crowded beaches and clubbing - and you don't
have to venture far from San Antonio to find the island's hidden cultural and
natural treasures.

Ibiza splits opinion. For some it is a hedonistic, party all-night Nirvana.
For others it suggests crowded beaches, lager louts and hastily built concrete
resorts. At its heart is San Antonio - known to the party crowd as 'San An',
it is home to the famous Cafe del Mar and some of the world's most legendary
clubs.
But neither view tells the whole story. Ibiza has been inhabited for more than
2,500 years, stretching back to the original Phoenician settlers, and has been
invaded many times - including, more latterly, by the hippies who arrived in
the Sixties and triggered a revolution in a way of life unchanged in
centuries. In the face of multiple invasions, the islanders' ability to retain
their own unique sense of identity and keep their cultural traditions alive
speaks volumes.
In the following pages, we have tried to redress the balance between Ibiza's
reputation as a brash party island and the magical island that visitors will
discover if they venture beyond the main resorts.
The island is surrounded by some of the most pristine waters in the
Mediterranean, and deserted coves lie within easy reach of the larger towns.
There are walking trails that wind along deserted stretches of coast and
through the forested interior, passing terraced fields with dry-stone walls
and groves of olive, almond, citrus and fig trees.
Most of the more remote villages, clustered around churches and traditional
fincas, have retained their rural identity. Many of these fincas have been
restored, and some have joined the agroturismo movement, which promotes a
locally sustainable holiday experience.

Ultimately, however, it is the people themselves who turn a natural paradise
into a holiday destination capable of revitalising mind, body and soul. And
nowhere is this more true than on the magical island of Ibiza.
