## Santander in Spain has a wide array of restaurants to suit all tastes and
pockets, from the uber-stylish to the insistently traditional, from high class
dining rooms to unprepossessing rustic havens.

Succulent seafood: 10 Great Restaurants in Santander, Northern Spain
12:19PM BST 12 May 2011
Inevitably, the accent is on fish, but lamb and beef from the mountains and
pastures also feature regularly on menus. Look out for the menu del dia,
especially at lunchtime, for three set courses at a reasonable price.
Here is a selection of 10 eateries in no particular order; no doubt you'll
discover your own favourite.
**1. EL SERBAL, C. Andres del Rio**
The young team at Santander's Michelin-starred restaurant continue to come up
with creative dishes from local ingredients, some of which are prepared in
front of diners. El Serbal (The Rowan) has a tasting menu, or from the a la
carte you could start with grilled asparagus with prawns and cockles, followed
by a sampling of three types of cod concoction or, from the meat menu, beef
tenderloin with foie gras ravioli. A selection of home-made breads is served,
and the 300-plus wine list does not just stick to Spain. For the quality, it's
quite affordable, too.

**2. LA BOMBI, C. Casimiro Sainz**
Another established favourite, your shellfish may come straight from La
Bombi's own tanks, so you can't get fresher. This two-level restaurant is
noted for its great variety of seafood, but also serves up great T-bone steaks
and other meat treats, along with an excellent selection of wines.
**3. EL PUNTAL, Pas. Perez Galdos**
The restaurant of Santander's premier hotel, the Real (Royal), is suitably
elegant with high ceilings and fine views from the large windows, some of
which have stained glass. Pastel colours and wood create a pleasing
environment in which to enjoy top-class Cantabrian cuisine, along with one of
the 180 wines.
**4. BODEGA CIGALENA, C. de Daoiz y Velarde**
Something of a wine museum, the collection of vintages here is amazing, with a
host of bottles of display. The first room serves exquisite tapas, while the
dining room will satisfy any taste: Iberian ham, dry-aged steak, cod, anchovy,
squid and a selection of decadent desserts.
**5. LOS PENUCAS, Barrio Pesquero**
In the port area/fishermen's quarter, this is a restaurant to which locals
head - always a good sign, plus it's been going for more than 50 years. The
team serve up just about anything from the sea, especially grilled fish, along
with paella which although is not a local dish, it is especially tasty made
with Cantabrian seafood.
**6. LA GAVIOTA, Barrio Pesquero**
In the same area as the above, La Gaviota also has a loyal local following and
a friendly welcome for visitors. Expect to find clams, prawns, seafood
platters and, for carnivores, steak in green pepper sauce. Wash down with
local wine and expect to be surprised at the value for money.
**7. CASA ALBO, C. Pena Herbosa**
Unpretentious it may be, but if you want to try world-class paella with local
seafood, this restaurant on a cobbled street is the place to head for. The
desserts and meat dishes also receive high praise - pheasant, partridge and
wild boar feature regularly. Interesting wine list, too.
**8. BODEGA EL RIOJANA, C. Rio de la Pila **
A special feature of this bodega are the dozens of wine barrels that have been
decorated by Spanish artists. They create an appealing setting to enjoy a wide
range of tapas and more substantial meals which, as the name suggests, are
influenced by the Rioja region to the south of Cantabria. Red peppers stuffed
with meat are a speciality.
**9. MESON GELE, C. Eduardo Benot**
Meat or fish, this restauranrt comes up with the goods. Salmon and cod salad,
tasty Iberian hams and the classic Cantabrian dish of entrecote steak
smothered in Tresviso blue cheese sauce from the Picos de Europa are all here.
As with many Cantabrian restaurants, hake - try it steamed - is another
feature.
**10. MIRADOR DE CASTELAR, C. de Castelar**
Overlooking the bay with great views, foodies will love the imaginative
recipes and presentation here. Look out for rabbit pie, ravioli stuffed with
angler fish and sirloin with plums, plus a sampler menu, served in a rustic
dining room laden with heavy beams in a building that dates back hundreds of
years.
