Choosing where to stay in Cantabria will largely depend on the type of holiday
you are planning, but the options are staggering for such a relatively small
region of Spain.
Former palaces, elegant spa hotels, old farmhouses, family-run inns, stylish
apartments... there's something for everyone, and it's so easy to book a
tailor-made package with Brittany Ferries. Here's a selection -- check the
website for many more ideas.
**Families**
For home-from-home freedom - and a taste of real Spanish living - renting one
of the many casas (houses), villas or apartments will suit many families or
couples.
Laredo's beautiful beaches provide everything a family could want from a great
seaside holiday, with plenty of water sports and a lively nightlife in the
resort.

A perfect choice here is Casa Sans Souci, a two-bedroom barn conversion just a
stroll from the beach - and if you visit in August, you can enjoy the amazing
Battle of Flowers festival and watch enormous floats swathed in blooms parade
through town.
Aparthotels also offer holiday freedom, space and privacy but with the
opportunity to enjoy hotel facilities and the company of others. Young
families love the Apartamentos Astuy at Isla Playa, where the adjacent
amenities include a pool, bar and a restaurant that serves lobster from its
own farm.
From nearby Somo, you can take the ferry across the bay to Santander or stroll
to the pretty town square and join Spanish families who gather at the
restaurants to sample excellent local food.
The Aparthotel Playa de Liencres at Boo de Pielagos is another best-of-both-
worlds option that has three pools, evening entertainment, a restaurant and
cafe as well as a children's summer club.
Spacious apartments each have a balcony or terrace and are a short drive from
some wonderful beaches and coves, the Picos de Europa or the buzzing city of
Santander.
**On a budget**
Ideal for families or couples on a budget is chalet camping and Noja's miles
of golden sands are a major attraction at Camping Playa Joyel, where guests
stay in compact wooden chalets but have the benefit of wide open spaces for
tennis, football and mini golf. There is also a games room, terrace bar and
restaurant and direct access to the fabulous beach.
Just inland of the beaches at Ruiloba is Camping El Helguero, which has a
pool, restaurant and entertainment for adults and children. The bonus here is
that outdoor activities such as mountain biking, fishing and canoeing are all
available locally and can be organised at the camp.
**Great outdoors**
If you want some adventure and excitement on your holiday, Cantabria has
enticing opportunities to make the most of the region's parks and landscape.
For walking and hiking, head to the Picos de Europa National Park and the
Hotel Del Oso in the heart of the Liebana Valley at Potes. The rolling
mountain views are marvellous and the hotel is close to the Fuentes De cable
car giving access to walks and trails to explore.
Close by, in the pretty market town of Potes, the Apartmentos Villes de Potes
make a great base for all the outdoor activities you can enjoy in the area.
Horse-riding, canoeing and white- water rafting are just some of the choices
that can be organised for you.
**Golfers **
The late Seve Ballesteros, much in sports fans' thoughts this month, learned
to master his tee shots at the Real Club de Golf in his home town of Pedreña.
The challenging course here is not long but has a spectacular location on a
peninsular.
Santander, and its array of hotels, is just two miles from Pedrena, making it
a hot spot for golfers who could choose the four-star Hotel Hoyuela or perhaps
the boutique-style Vincci Puertochico opposite the harbour.
In San Vicente de la Barquera, Golf Santa Marina is a longer course that was
designed by Ballesteros. Not only is the Hotel Golf Rovacias perfectly placed
to enjoy the par 71 and its 16th-century clubhouse but the hotel also has its
own nine-hole course.
**Taste of luxury **
For opulence and elegance, Cantabria's matriarch is the Hotel Real in
Santander. This five-star landmark occupies a prime position overlooking the
bay and was built in 1917 to house the friends of King Alfonso XIII who was an
enthusiastic summer visitor to the city.
A former 17th-century palace, the Hotel La Torre de Ruesga in Limpias has been
lovingly restored to create elegant rooms with exposed beams, stone walls and
the occasional original ceiling fresco. This unique hotel provides a wonderful
spot for walks along the River Ason.
Another former palace nestles in the glorious countryside of Villacarriedo.
The Palacio de Sonanes has a classic Spanish style and individually decorated
bedrooms reached by a lovely renaissance staircase.
One of the elite group of Parador hotels (which must have impressive
historical and architectural credentials to become a member) is the Parador
Gil Blas in Santillana del Mar, a picture-postcard village whose seventh-
century origins have earned it National Monument status.
And for luxury with an environmental conscience, the four-star Hotel Reserva
del Saja in the Cabuerniga Valley is one of only five in Spain to have earned a
Certificate of Environmental Excellence. Every element of the hotel and every
product used has to meet strict "green" guidelines. The mountain resort and
spa also boasts a mouth-watering restaurant.
Whatever you want from your holiday or mini break, from Cantabria's rolling
countryside and golden coastline to fascinating city destinations, this
delightful Spanish region can accommodate your every wish and ensure a warm
welcome.
