# Michael Vaughan: England are yet again going to arrive at a World Cup
mentally and physically worn out
## England have repeated the same mistakes of 2003 and 2007 in preparing for
the World Cup.

The tour programme in Australia was too long. The players are clearly
emotionally and physically knackered and I would have liked to see England be
a bit more proactive in sending some of the guys home, particularly Andrew
Strauss, for a couple of weeks.
We have the players to succeed in the sub-continent, and we could still do
that, but we are asking a lot from the players to perform to a high standard
in the World Cup having been in Australia for four months.
The players are picking up injuries leading into the tournament and when you
look at teams who have won the World Cup in the past, they have the spine of
their team sorted and are playing good cricket by this stage.
Yesterday Matt Prior dropped down to No6 and Steven Davies opened. Is that a
sign they are not sure of their best opening partnership? I thought Prior was
a cert to open in India and if you have a settled new-ball attack you would
not change it with one match before a World Cup, so why do the same with the
openers?
England have got lots of questions about their best XI and that is tricky
leading into a World Cup. If Eoin Morgan is out injured then that is a massive
blow. Look at the past year. When England have played well, Morgan has been
the difference on many occasions. If he has displaced his finger, he will need
an operation and is out. If it is just a crack then he will be fine but I
don't like what I'm hearing and the fact he is seeing a specialist when he
gets home. That does not bode well.

England might take a chance on him but you cannot carry injured players in the
World Cup, particularly in India where you can suffer illness on the morning
of a match, which means other players carrying knocks, such as Tim Bresnan,
might miss out.
This is the best one-day squad England have had. They bat deep, have two
spinners, players who can change matches and skilful bowlers. No doubt they
will have to play smarter cricket than they did in Australia but we have
skills to match the other teams. It is just whether or not anyone is still
standing.
