# Rose Prince's recipes for November
## As the days get shorter and colder, it's only natural to fill up on warm,
rich dishes. In her recipes for November, Rose Prince dispenses with the
salad.

I am right off lettuce. I can barely watch someone else eat it without
shivering, or look at those fat, clear pillows full of rocket leaves in shops.
It's like that moment when you know you can no longer go out wearing shoes
without socks. Your stomach begs to be warm, just like your toes - and
fingers, for that matter.
I read somewhere that if life is too temperature-controlled, our bodies become
confused. We need to allow ourselves to feel the cold in order to eat right.
After a cold November walk we easily metabolise large helpings of richer food.
It is a sensible theory, because people's health and the seasons are so
closely linked.
Keep changing the variety of what you eat and you will keep fit, studies
suggest, and at this time of year the scope is vast. Huge gatherings of
apples, pears and cobnuts have come in from the orchards; pheasant, partridge,
mallard and snipe lie at the feet of men, their battle for freedom over -
though not inevitably so. Markets are selling more robust greens than lettuce:
leeks, kale, cabbages and purple sprouting broccoli. These are the things I
want to eat now, along with bowls of hot potato, whipped with crumbly cheese,
enough to start a roaring furnace in the tummy, and warm yourself from inside
out.
