# Manchester United and Barcelona stars' real prize: meeting Nick Clegg
|

## Nick Clegg , the Deputy Prime Minister, will greet the Manchester United
|
||
and Barcelona players in the royal box at Wembley after the Champions League
|
||
final.

David Cameron was unable to persuade President Barack Obama to hold a one-to-
|
||
one meeting with Nick Clegg, but he has arranged a surprising honour for his
|
||
deputy.
|
||
|
||
Mandrake can disclose that Clegg will greet the winners of Manchester United's
|
||
Champions League final against Barcelona in the royal box at Wembley.
|
||
|
||
"I don't think he's handing out the medals, but he will be sitting in the
|
||
front row when they come up," confirms his spokesman. "He will be shaking
|
||
their hands and offering congratulations or commiserations."
|
||
|
||
While tickets for the match are changing hands for thousands of pounds,
|
||
Cameron may have thought the invitation could provoke some amusing tensions in
|
||
Clegg's household coalition.
|
||
|
||
The Liberal Democrat's wife, Miriam Gonzalez Durantez, is Spanish and their
|
||
three sons, Antonio, Alberto and Miguel, are being brought up to be bilingual.

"Although he can speak Spanish, he's supporting United," says Clegg's
|
||
spokesman. "Miriam's going, too. She says she's got divided loyalties."
|
||
|
||
Cameron handed out the medals at the FA Cup final last weekend, provoking much
|
||
comment about why a member of the Royal family had not done the honours. The
|
||
Duke of Cambridge, who is president of the Football Association, had not
|
||
returned from his honeymoon in time. The Queen and the Duchess of Kent have
|
||
presented the cup in the past.
|
||
|
||
Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, is one of Labour's most prominent
|
||
supporters. Happily, there will be no injunctions against photographs of Clegg
|
||
with the player Ryan Giggs.
