# Jeremy Paxman grills Theresa May on child benefit cuts
## In an interview on BBC's Newsnight, Theresa May, the Home Secretary, was
pressed eleven times by presenter Jeremy Paxman as to when she first heard
that the controversial child benefit cut policy was to be announced.

But in echoes of the infamous 1997 Michael Howard interview, when he was
repeatedly grilled on prisons policy, she persistently refused to give a
direct answer.
Instead, she said the decision was "a matter for the Chancellor and the
Secretary of State for Work and Pensions" and added: "No, I didn't first hear
about it on breakfast television yesterday".
Paxman asked the question several times, and interrupted the Home Secretary
when she was speaking, saying: "You haven't given me a date."
She replied by joking: "Are you asking me for a date, Jeremy?", to laughter
and applause from the audience at the Conservative conference - but still
refused to tell him.
