speed and in your own time. OU student Richard Want shares his education
experiences.

You might think writing fiction would come easily to a PR man, but Richard
Want is keen to produce the real McCoy. And he reckons the best place to learn
is The Open University.

OU student Richard Want shares his education experiences
"I enrolled because of the authoritative teaching and because the courses are
so well structured," says Richard, 48, who runs a public relations business in
Cumbria. "The Open University is long- established and has a lot of success
stories. I trust the system and wanted to be challenged."
After a short course, Start Writing Fiction, Richard is now taking an eight-
month course in Creative Writing. It's every bit as professional as he
expected, with a formal timetable and structure, and tutors who are helpful
and highly committed.
What he hadn't expected was the amount of interaction with other students. As
well as two residential weekends, there are online forums where groups swap
experiences and give mutual support.
"It's about giving as much as taking," says Richard. "Peer reviewing is much
encouraged, and it's fascinating to see how people lose their inhibitions and
start to reveal more of their work. It makes the course more complete."
Richard has even plucked up the courage to show his work to his family.

The 14 hours a week is quite feasible if you're organised, Richard has found,
and the course offers help with time management.
"Not only are you fully in control, but our tutor treats us as equals."
Richard's creative writing course will take him almost a fifth of the way
towards a humanities degree and he's already contemplating his next move. "One
of the joys of The Open University is there's so much to explore and it's so
flexible. You can choose your own path and change it as you progress."
He's considering Start Listening to Music next. Then if his fiction doesn't
sell he could repurpose his skills to write music reviews for the local press.
With The Open University, the possibilities are endless.
