Bowerman has now completed two OU courses which she fitted in around her
hectic lifestyle.

Whenever one of Kija Bowerman's students suffers a setback or their studies
get a bit too much, her answer is simple: "If I can do it, so can you."

The 66-year-old private tutor from Camberwell, south London, completed her
second Open University degree, a Masters in Classical Studies, in 2009. It's
an achievement anyone would be proud of, but success was particularly sweet
for Kija because she suffers from dyslexia, and although she loves to study,
reading and writing don't come easily.
"One reason I've been so keen to work with The Open University is their
support for people with dyslexia and other disabilities," says Kija. "They've
always been very good about giving dyslexic students extra time in exams or to
complete assignments."
On leaving school Kija went to drama college and trained as a teacher, but her
course didn't start awarding degrees until just after she'd left. "That
niggled a bit and I'd always wanted a degree, but the main reason I wanted to
study was the subject matter," she says.
A lifelong passion for the classics led Kija to explore The Open University's
wealth of classical courses. "Then in 1997 they started offering Ancient
Greek. I studied Latin to A level but my school didn't do Greek, so The Open
University gave me a second chance."

When she planned her first degree in 1987 Kija was working as an actress and
the flexible study regime fitted her itinerant lifestyle. "You have to be
disciplined and get assignments in on time," she says. "But one thing I like
about The Open University is the laissez- faire attitude. People don't have to
fit the university; the university fits the people.
Kija was one of more than 40,000 students on modest incomes who receive
financial help from The Open University. "I received help with the cost of my
Masters, otherwise I just couldn't have afforded it," says Kija. "But if I win
the Lottery, one of the first thingsIwilldoissetupa bursary to help others
study at The Open University!"** **
