# Manchester United's Michael Owen blasts Newcastle fans for booing him during
|
|
goalless draw at St James' Park
|

|
## Manchester United striker Michael Owen has expressed his disappointment at
|
|
being booed by Newcastle fans during last night's goalless draw and claims if
|
|
he'd known the feeling of resentment against him was that bad he would have
|
|
left the club a lot sooner.
|

Owen, who joined Newcastle from Real Madrid for £16 million in 2005,
|
|
eventually left in 2009 after four injury-hit years, unable to prevent the
|
|
club being relegated to the Championship. That summer he signed for
|
|
**[United][3]** on a free transfer.
|
|
|
|
However, as far as Owen was concerned, there had never been any suggestion of
|
|
animosity between himself and the **[Newcastle][4]** supporters. Although he
|
|
expected some booing, as is traditional when a footballer returns to play
|
|
against his former club, the 31 year-old voiced his shock at the amount of
|
|
negative feeling fired in his direction when he came on as an 81st-minute
|
|
substitute.
|
|
|
|
Owen tweeted: "From what most of you Newcastle fans are saying you should be
|
|
pleased I left the club! If i had known that earlier I could have left sooner!
|
|
|
|
He added: "Got a poor reception off the home fans which was disappointing. Was
|
|
desperate to score!
|
|
|
|
"Knew I would get booed as that's what a lot of fans do but if they knew the
|
|
facts then they may have a different opinion.

"For the record, I tried my best in every game for Newcastle. Under KK (Kevin
|
|
Keegan) I played well and i'll never forget the 2 I scored against Sunderland
|
|
(on 20 April 2008).

"When I meet Newcastle or Liverpool fans they all respect what I've done for
|
|
their clubs. In stadiums it changes, 1 boo and the rest follow.

"By the way, im not looking for sympathy. As long as my family don't boo me
|

when I walk through the door I couldn't care less!!!"

The 0-0 draw was a major blow to United's hopes of significantly increasing
|
|
their lead over nearest rivals Arsenal in the Premier League title race.
|
|
|
|
United are now seven points clear but Arsene Wenger's side have a game in hand
|
|
and play Tottenham tonight at White Hart Lane. A win would narrow the gap to
|
|
four points with five games to play.

Owen added: "Disappointing result but credit to Newcastle, they played well
|
|
and put us under plenty of pressure especially in the first half an hour."
