# London 2012 Olympics: Brands Hatch announced as final Games venue
|
|
|
|
## Brands Hatch will host the London 2012 Paralympics road cycling events,
|
|
making it the final confirmed Games venue.

The motor racing circuit, near Sevenoaks in Kent, will host the events between
|
|
September 5 and 8, 2012, with approximately half of the course taking in the
|
|
former F1 Grand Prix circuit.
|
|
|
|
The selection of Brands Hatch was made after consultation with local
|
|
authorities and stakeholders but the ease with which Games organisers could
|
|
utilise existing venue infrastructure and its proximity to the Athlete's
|
|
Village on the [**Olympic**][7] Park aided its cause.
|
|
|
|
The course was required to meet strict criteria to make the races challenging
|
|
for a wide variety of disability groups.
|
|
|
|
But London organising committee chair Lord Sebastian Coe admitted its location
|
|
outside of London was a good way of extending the reach of the Games.
|
|
|
|
"We are thrilled to be bringing such a high profile and exciting Paralympic
|
|
sport here to Brands Hatch," Lord Coe said. "This will help us extend the
|
|
Games outside London and will give spectators and athletes the chance to
|
|
discover yet another stunning part of our country."

[There will 32 road cycling events][13] during the Paralympics - for both men
|
|
and women - accounting for a range of disabilities including visual
|
|
impairments, cerebral palsy and amputations.
|
|
|
|
Some 225 athletes from 40 nations will take part in the road cycling events,
|
|
with high hopes held for the British team who won 20 Paralympic cycling medals
|
|
at the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
|
|
|
|
Rachel Morris, a Paralympic gold medallist and London 2012 hope, said she
|
|
expects a challenging race at the course.
|
|
|
|
"I'm extremely excited to potentially be competing at Brands Hatch. Winning
|
|
another gold medal but on home soil this time would just be fantastic.
|
|
|
|
"The course looks great and it will be a real test for athletes, promising a
|
|
great show for spectators. I can't wait to give it my best shot in under 500
|
|
days time."
