# David Weir completes golden hat-trick with 5,000m victory at IPC Athletics

## David Weir, the wheelchair racer, won his third gold medal of the IPC
|
|
Athletics World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand, when he took the
|
|
T54 5,000 metres.

He now has his eye on a fourth, in this weekend's marathon.

Weir, 31, is in the prime of his athletic life, and he has laid down a
|
|
significant marker in the last major athletics championships before London.
|
|
|
|
Wheelchair racers tend to peak in their early to mid-thirties, and Weir, at
|
|
31, is in the prime of his athletic life, which augurs well for London in 20
|
|
months' time.
|
|
|
|
Given that these are the last major athletics championships before London,
|
|
Weir has laid down a significant marker.
|
|
|
|
Victory in yesterday's T54 5000m went with his 1500m and 800m medals won
|
|
earlier in the week. Having competed, and stormed to victory, in the New York
|
|
Marathon in November last year, the shackles were off.
|

In a tactical race, Weir pipped Swiss rival Marcel Hug in 10min 48.43sec.
|
|
Reaching a top speed of 22.3mph, Weir clocked 44.12 seconds to destroy his
|
|
rivals on the final lap. Hug finished second in 10-48.70.
|
|
|
|
British double amputee runner Richard Whitehead, 34, has been ruled out of the
|
|
marathon after an appeal against the ruling that single and double amputees
|
|
may not take part in the same event was rejected.
|
|
|
|
Partially-sighted T11 and T12 classes, and wheelchair classes also take part,
|
|
for separate medals. T42 amputee athletes are not, at present, included in the
|
|
IPC-sanctioned marathon events. Whitehead ran his first marathon in New York
|
|
in 2004, and is the current marathon world record holder for double leg
|
|
amputees, with a best of 2hr 42min 52sec.
|
|
|
|
He recorded that time in the Chicago marathon last October. Whitehead is
|
|
trying to schedule a meeting with Xavier Gonzalez, chief executive of the IPC,
|
|
to resolve the issue ahead of the 2012 Games in London.
|
|
|
|
Elsewhere, Aled Davies, 19, the world junior champion and world junior record
|
|
holder, took the F42 discus event bronze medal with a throw of 41.56m, and
|
|
Beijing Paralympic Games silver medallist Ben Rushgrove won his second medal
|
|
of the championships with a bronze medal in the men's T36 200m.
