# Security budget for London 2012 Olympic Games set to break record
## The security budget for the London Olympics is likely to snowball if
terrorist attacks continue in the lead-up to 2012, according to the
International Olympic Committee official in charge of supervising the Games.

Denis Oswald, the chairman of the IOC's co-ordination committee for London
2012, told _Telegraph Sport_ that he expected all previous records to be
broken by the security provisions laid on under the supervision of the
Metropolitan Police.
"It's really a difficult budget," Oswald said, as he prepared to deliver a
lecture at De Montfort University in Leicester. "Compared to previous Games,
it is really rocketing.
"I would think it would be the biggest spend on security in Olympic history.
It is sad, because you think of all the other things that the money could be
spent on, but that is the evolution of the world.
"Athens spent €900 million (£780 million), and brought in support from
different countries as well. In the lead-up to 2004, there was an attack in
Istanbul, as well as the bombings in Madrid.
"Nobody knows how much it will cost London in the end, because it all depends
on the situation: a few attacks like the one in Mumbai, especially if they are
closer to this country, and they will have to reinforce security again."

The security budget for the London Games was stepped up in December last year,
when an additional £238million contingency fund was added to the £600 million
already earmarked for the purpose.
"But the rising costs in other areas, including the Government's need to cover
the shortfall in private investment, will make it difficult for the organisers
to balance their books.
Plans to build social housing alongside the promised 16,000 beds in the
Olympic Village have already been abandoned, and several sports are waiting to
see how badly their funding will be slashed as the recession bites into
Government revenues.
The man in charge of developing a master plan for Olympic security, the former
Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner Tarique Ghaffur, has just left the
project after settling a claim against the force.
But Oswald believes that the UK is ideally equipped to defend itself after
years of monitoring terrorist networks.
"Experience plays quite a big role, and with the situation in Ireland the UK
has been dealing with terrorism and threats for quite a number of years,"
Oswald said.
"You probably have the best experts in the world. There is such an evolution
that you cannot just rely on what you did 10 years ago, but still I am
confident that everything will be safely covered."
The one thing that concerns Oswald is that the outstanding decisions on venues
for some sports - most obviously badminton - should be finalised.
"There are still discussions about moving one venue or another,'' Oswald said.
"How can you plan your security or your transport if you are not sure where
the competition is going to take place?"
