# Olympic funding cuts could see Team GB plunge at London 2012 Games, claims
BOA
## Funding cuts to Olympic athletes due to be announced this week could see
the British team drop as low as eighth in the 2012 medal table according to
the British Olympic Association, who yesterday called on Prime Minister Gordon
Brown to honour the commitments to sport he made as Chancellor.

UK Sport are expected to announce significant budget cuts this week after
talks with the Treasury over filling a £100million hole in their £600million
budget ended in failure.
The shortfall, which will see a number of sports dropped from UK Sport's top-
level programmes, comes after the Department for Culture, Media and Sport
failed to attract private investors to the project.
An increase in anticipated Lottery ticket sales has reduced the £100million
shortfall to £79million and there are suggestions that the Government may find
another £20million, but there is no expectation that the Government will
underwrite the rest.
The Treasury's intransigence has dismayed many as UK Sport were unequivocally
told to budget for the full £600?million announced by Brown in 2006.
In his penultimate budget as Chancellor he pledged to provide an additional
£300million in funding in the build-up to 2012. Brown said the exchequer would
provide £200million, with the additional £100million coming from the private
sector.
In August the Government announced a fund-raising proposal 'Medal Hopes' but
there is little expectation it will raise significant funding.
Yesterday Lord Moynihan, chairman of the BOA, said the Treasury's own figures
demonstrated that the anticipated cuts could see Team GB unable to meet their
target of fourth in the London medal table, which would match this summer's
performance in Beijing.
According to Moynihan the cuts will see core funding to governing bodies drop
from £44.3million a year, the amount the Treasury agreed would be sufficient
to secure fourth place, to about £29million, which was forecast to deliver
eighth place.
"This funding cut effectively means that the Treasury accepts we are now
targeting eighth in London 2012," he said. "UK Sport and Culture Secretary
Andy Burnham have worked exceptionally hard on this, but it appears the
Treasury has decided to make a cut that will damage British athletes and their
chances of producing great performances in front of their home crowd in 2012.
"We are not calling for additional funding - we realise that the economic
climate is tough - but we are calling for the Government to honour its word
and for the Prime Minister to honour what he promised in 2006.
"UK Sport has always been told to budget for the full £600million, so whether
it comes from the public sector, Lottery sales or the private sector is
irrelevant.
"The athletes deserve better, particularly in view of their amazing
performance in Beijing."
