# Government ponders £20m athlete bail-out for London 2012
## The Government was last night considering granting a £20-£30 million bail-
out for Britain's Olympic athletes to close a funding shortfall that threatens
to embarrass the Government in the build-up to the London 2012 Games.

Culture secretary Andy Burnham is expected to inform UK Sport on Tuesday how
much Government funding they will receive ahead of 2012, but on Monday night
it was still unclear how much of a £300 million package promised by Gordon
Brown when he was Chancellor will be delivered.
Talks between officials from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and
the Treasury continued into the evening over how to close a £79 million gap in
funding caused by the Government's failure to attract private sector
investment for athlete funding.
In the 2006 Budget, Brown committed the Government to £300 million of
additional funding in the run-up to London 2012, with £100 million of that
expected to come from the private sector.
That has proved wishful thinking, however. The DCMS are yet to raise a penny
in private funding, partly because their sponsorship scheme 'Medal Hopes' is
yet to be signed off three months after it was announced.
An increase in projected Lottery sales has seen the Government revise the
figure down to £79 million, but despite the funding difficulties, UK Sport
have repeatedly been told to budget for the full £300 million.

Several sources have said that they were hopeful the shortfall will have been
reduced by at least £20 million by the end of the week. With the gap unlikely
to be smaller than £50 million, however, UK Sport are likely to have to cut
funding to at least 10 sports.
The negotiations continued against an atmosphere of deep frustration among
sports who feel the Government are reneging on a promise that would transform
British sport.
David Sparkes, the chief executive of UK Swimming, said: "In the context of a
£9 billion Games, £79 million seems a small additional cost when you consider
the tremendous rewards it could deliver."
Ed Warner, the chairman of UK Athletics, said: "I think it's time for the
Treasury to get some perspective on this matter and realise that if they want
to make the most of the opportunity of staging the Games in London then they
should commit fully to the programme of delivering for all the sports in four
years' time."
