# Olympic sports lose out ahead of 2012 Games
## Eight Olympics sports are facing an uncertain future after learning today
that they have missed out on high-performance funding for London 2012.

The sports of fencing, handball, shooting, table tennis, volleyball, water
polo, weightlifting and wrestling all received the phone calls they were
dreading this morning as UK Sport announced details of their Olympic funding
allocations for the period 2009 to 2013.
UK Sport said the decision was based on their "no compromise" investment
strategy, which concentrates resources on those sports most likely to produce
medals in four years' time.
The agency were forced to make sweeping cutbacks to make up for a £50 million
shortfall in their original 2012 budget.
That figure had stood at £79m before the Government pledged a further £29m of
public funds earlier this week, though UK were still required to find savings
at their board meeting on Tuesday.
Sue Campbell, the chair of UK Sport, said: "With a shortfall in the overall
funding available we had to make some tough calls, but we did so in the
knowledge that our 'no compromise' strategy is not only known and understood
by sport but was also the basis of our success in Beijing.

All of the Olympic and Paralympic sports were given their funding figures this
morning. Four Paralympic sports have also lost out: fencing, volleyball,
women's wheelchair basketball and goalball, a team sport for blind athletes.
The sports that have missed out have been told by UK Sport that they will work
with them over the coming weeks to try to identify other sources of funding
such as private sponsorship, while a further review of their finances will
take place in January.
Those with the best performance potential will be allocated basic funding,
though it is unlikely to be enough to run the kind of high-performance
programmes that are necessary if they are to challenge for medals. Some of the
sports are likely to miss out on the Games altogether.
The news is especially tough on shooting, who received more than £5m in the
previous funding cycle but who missed out on the podium in Beijing. It was
only eight years ago, in Sydney, that shooter Richard Faulds won a gold medal.
Table tennis, which has a number of promising young players coming through,
will also feel particularly aggrieved.
There will also be great disappointment felt by volleyball and handball, both
of whom had hoped to use the 2012 Games to establish themselves as Olympic
sports in Britain.
Handball has been particularly ambitious, setting up a high-performance
academy in Aarhus, Denmark. Without funding, there is little chance of it
continuing.
UK Sport have committed a total of £292 million for the next Olympic cycle and
revealed that their target is a "top four" place in the London medals table,
which allows for improvement on the original target of "fourth place" that was
achieved ahead of time in Beijing.
Among the Olympic sports there are some notable winners in the funding stakes,
with cycling being rewarded for their stunning successes in Beijing with a
£4.8m rise on their previous allocation.
