**Alan Smith **- Black day in Bloemfontein
It will be difficult to ever forget Bloemfontein, because not only did it
provide the setting for one of the most humiliating days in England's football
history, it witnessed the most scandalous miscarriage of justice seen in
recent times.
When Frank Lampard's shot clearly crossed the line in the World Cup tie with
Germany, I instinctively grabbed hold of the bloke next to me in the press
box. 'That's in!' I cried. 'We're back in this now!'
To be honest, practically everyone thought the same within that stadium. Just
a pity for England that the match officials didn't.

**Ben Ainslie **- Beating the Aussies
I spent Christmas in Australia this year and it was great to be here to
witness and celebrate the English success in the Ashes! You always take a bit
of stick being a 'Pommy' in Oz, especially when there is cricket on; it's
great to be able to give it back for once!
It is a fantastic achievement for the England boys to have retained the Ashes
down here. They've trained hard, shown themselves to be great team. Andrew
Strauss and his team have done Britain proud!
**Sir Chris Hoy **- Mark Cavendish bounces back
Stage Five of the Tour de France, from Epernay to Montargis, and the moment
when Mark Cavendish silenced the critics and doubters with his first stage win
of this year's Tour.
Things hadn't been going well for Cav in the first week and he had failed to
feature in either of the first two sprints. His opponents sensed blood. Had
the Cavenidsh bubble finally burst? Never.
Back he came with a commanding win after a wonderful gutsy ride and you can
see the joy, and a little relief, in his celebrations as he crossed the line.
The tears on the podium a few minutes later also showed just how much it meant
to him and frankly from that moment onwards he never looked like losing
another sprint.
**David Coulthard **- The desert stormer
My moment of the year -- and I say this unapologetically -- has to be
Sebastian Vettel's title-winning drive in Abu Dhabi. It was just so
unexpected.
Going into the race, Fernando Alonso was the clear favourite and when Mark
Webber qualified so far back the Spaniard's task was even simpler. For Alonso
to finish seventh and Sebastian to claim the crown was just plain bonkers.
Following hard on the heels of the constructors' title win in Brazil, it was a
hell of a week for Red Bull and I take enormous pride at the role I played in
their six-year journey to success.
**Alan Hansen **- Latin lesson
Having been so eagerly-anticipated, the World Cup proved to be a pretty boring
spectacle this summer, but my highlight of the year still came from South
Africa.
After a disappointing group stage, it was fantastic to watch the South
American nations go head-to-head with two stunning games in the last 16 when
Brazil played Chile and Argentina faced Mexico. Both games were full of flair,
attacking football and positivity - it was exactly what the World Cup is
supposed to be about.
I am obviously a big advocate of defensive qualities, and New Zealand
emphasised how organisation and discipline can work for the smaller nations,
but the World Cup is about exciting football and those two games were the
highlight for me.
**Colin Montgomerie **- McDowell the magnificent
Never mind the golfing event of the year I think the Ryder Cup was the
sporting occasion of the year. And within that Graeme McDowell's putt on 16
was the moment of the year. It was quite amazing.
He was left on his own with the weight of European golf on his shoulders. And
then there was the drama on 17. You always want your man to hole the winning
putt but in the end Hunter Mahan fluffed his chip to hand victory to Graeme. I
felt for him.
Sport at this level tests human beings like no other discipline; thousands
watching live, millions more on TV. Actors can always do another take. Hunter
couldn't
**Brian Moore **- Chris Ashton's wonder try
If you see it end on, you can clearly see he is smiling when he still has over
75 metres to go. The glorious long-range try by England wing Chris Ashton
against Australia this autumn had more significance than it being probably the
best individual finish see at Twickenham.
That try signalled the end to the nightmare which was last season and
England's wandering in a wilderness of self-deception: with it came definable
purpose and cause for optimism. It gave hope where none had seemed possible
and may yet turn out to be the moment of many a recent year.
**Will Greenwood **- Australia stun Paris
My moment of the year was less an image and more a demolition. Australia in
Paris were wonderful. They scored 46 second-half unanswered points against
France in the amazing Stade de France. The hosts had come off a Grand Slam
season were humbled.
It was such a comprehensive win that even the French fans who normally boo
poor performances by their team were left silent, unsure of what to do next.
Australia may not have a pack but that second half in Paris told me that while
everyone talks about New Zealand and South Africa for 2011, you really can't
write off those Australians. Everything they touched that day turned to gold.
Forget canary yellow, it was 24 carat.
**Geoffrey Boycott **- Pacquiao power
When Manny Pacquiao beat Antonio Margarito he became an eight-division world
champion. What I like about Pacquiao is that he fights without hubris.
There is none of the pre-fight hype or ego. He just gets on with the job and
beats his opponents with skill and guile. To dominate so many weight divisions
is a sign of a great fighter and athlete and he is showing no signs of slowing
down.
**Michael Vaughan **- Over and out
England bowling Australia out for 98 on Boxing Day in front of nearly 85,000
people at the MCG was a terrific effort that will live long in the memory.
England had been hammered in Perth and it looked like their hopes of retaining
the Ashes were in serious danger. Andrew Strauss won a crucial toss but the
bowlers had to respond and they were outstanding.
Chris Tremlett and James Anderson were quick and swung the ball while Tim
Bresnan did wonders when the ball was old and soft. It set England up for a
famous victory.
**Marcus Armytage **- Arc flight of fantasy
Workforce winning the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in October was
the sporting moment of the year I enjoyed most from an armchair rather than a
saddle.
He was a brilliant Derby winner who had apparently lost his way in the King
George V and Queen Elizabeth Stakes when beaten 17 lengths by Harbinger. It is
essential for the reputation and prestige of the Derby that its' winner goes
on to great things and it was the training feat of the season for Sir Michael
Stoute to get him back.
In Ryan Moore he had an exceptional jockey too and I look forward to seeing
Workforce in action again at four.
