|
to the sporting lexicon
|
|
|
|
## From downright catchy to painfully irritating, 2010 has brought us plenty
|
|
of new entries into the sporting lexicon.

|

**VUVUZELA**
|
|
|
|
Defended by Sepp Blatter as a 'cultural symbol' of South Africa, when in fact
|
|
it was a cheap plastic trumpet, the vuvuzela produces an irritating monotonal
|
|
drone that drowns out anything within a radius of roughly half a mile.
|
|
|
|
We still have one in the Telegraph office, and every so often someone blows
|
|
it. But never the same person twice.
|
|
|
|
**GAMES MAKER**
|
|
|
|

Or in regular parlance, an Olympic volunteer. Why Locog couldn't simply call
|
|
them 'volunteers', especially in this age of Big Society, is a mystery. Over
|
|
70,000 people are being sought to make the Games between now and 2012.

**SABERMETRICS**
|
|
|
|
In John Henry, Liverpool have a new kind of owner -- a thinker rather than a
|
|
blank chequebook.
|
|
|
|
Henry is a fervent devotee of sabermetrics: a baseball theory that uses
|
|
certain statistics to attempt to identify the most valuable players on a team.
|
|
Can it be applied to football? Next year is likely to tell us.
|
|
|
|
**TIKI-TAKA**
|
|
|
|
The term, used to describe appealing, quick passing football, has been coined
|
|
before, but this was the year in which it came to beautiful fruition.
|
|
|
|
In world champions Spain it had its global standard-bearers, and in
|
|
Barcelona's awesome 5-0 demolition of Real Madrid it had its defining moment.
|
|
|
|
**DRS**
|
|
|
|
The new review system in cricket has forced one of the oldest maxims of the
|
|
game to be rewritten.
|
|
|
|
The umpire's decision is final ... unless one of the captains makes a little
|
|
T-shape with his arms. It may disrupt the flow of the game, but nobody can
|
|
deny that DRS has increased the number of correct decisions being made.
|
|
|
|
**SNOOD**
|
|
|
|
Gloves were bad enough; tights were even worse, but somehow the ire of the
|
|
casual fan reached a tipping point with the arrival of the neck-warmer.
|
|
|
|
Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri were among its most prominent wearers.
|
|
|
|
**PAYMENT-IN-KIND LOANS**
|
|
|
|
As laboured under by Manchester United. Essentially, if you want to buy a
|
|
football club, but don't have enough leverage to meet the purchase price, you
|
|
use these high-interest loans to bridge the gap.
|
|
|
|
The Glazers did, and intend to siphon money out of the club to pay off the
|
|
14.25 per cent annual interest rate.
|
|
|
|
**CLENBUTEROL**
|
|
|
|
The stimulant de mode. Clenbuterol, which eases breathing, has shown up in a
|
|
number of tests this year.
|
|
|
|
Olympic table tennis medallist Dimitrij Ovtcharov and British hurdler Callum
|
|
Priestley both tested positive for it, but it was the positive test by Tour de
|
|
France winner Alberto Contador that really put clenbuterol on the radar.
|
|
|
|
**TWITFAM**
|
|
|
|
As in: "Mornin twitfam!", the favoured Twitter greeting of Rio Ferdinand.
|
|
|
|
A contraction of 'Twitter family', the term allows celebrities to create the
|
|
impression of community and kinship. Plus, it sounds a lot better than
|
|
'minions'.
|
|
|
|
**THE 25-MAN SQUAD**
|
|
|
|
Instituted to promote home-grown talent, the 25-man rule has inspired nothing
|
|
but scorn.
|
|
|
|
Arsene Wenger and Harry Redknapp have been among its most vocal critics, while
|
|
head of the PFA Gordon Taylor said it did not go far enough.
|
|
|
|
**DESSO**
|
|
|
|
After being relaid around 11 or 12 times -- nobody seems to have been able to
|
|
keep count -- Wembley finally settled on the part-natural, part-artificial
|
|
Desso turf found at the Bernabeu, the Emirates and Anfield.
|
|
|
|
No cutting-up or twisted ankles so far, but the real test for Wembley's Desso
|
|
will come at the Champions League Final in May.
|
|
|
|
**SUPER-INJUNCTION**
|
|
|
|
In 2010, you were nobody unless you had taken out a super-injunction to cover
|
|
some alleged misdeed.
|
|
|
|
John Terry had his lifted, but at least two other England internationals have
|
|
theirs still in place.
|
|
|
|
**GRAHAM GOOCH'S SLINGY-ARM THING THAT DOESN'T HAVE A NAME YET**
|
|
|
|
Gooch's device, which slings a cricket ball down at great speed using very
|
|
little effort, is still awaiting a definitive name, despite selling in its
|
|
thousands.
|
|
|
|
Its trade name is the Sidearm, but we reckon we can do better than that.
|
|
|
|
