[Comments][6]
**Fifth Test, day five, Sydney. England (644) beat Australia (280 & 281) by an
innings and 83 runs. **
**It is always a **fantastic achievement to beat Australia in Australia, but
winning three Tests by an innings is as decisive and comprehensive as you can
get.
It has been a real team effort, because many individuals have contributed at
telling moments in the Tests.
Just like a football team, the strength of a side is your reserves. Chris
Tremlett and Tim Bresnan came into the team for Stuart Broad and Steven Finn
and did well. So well, in fact, that it is difficult to be sure who will be
the three first-choice seamers for the first Test against Sri Lanka at Cardiff
in May.
For me, the two outstanding players have been James Anderson and Alastair
Cook. Cook has batted far beyond his wildest dreams, when you think how much
he struggled to make a run last summer, or even keep his place in the side
until his hundred in the third Test at the Oval.
We all know Anderson is a fantastic swing and seam bowler if there is anything
in the pitch, but there was always a question mark over how he would fare in
Australia. Four years ago, he played only three Tests and took five wickets at
79 runs each.
But his maturity and discipline to bowl very straight and keep the batsmen
under pressure with the old ball have been exceptional. We always knew he
could swing the new ball and get the odd wicket, which he has done, but he has
also been reversing the ball and causing problems in Melbourne and Sydney.
Our catching and athletic out-fielding has been far better than Australia's,
and that does not happen very often either.
Congratulations to our selectors over the last couple of years, and well done
to the backroom staff for helping the players get to a level where they are
now: capable of beating India and South Africa. What they have to do now is
stay focused, be ambitious and go after that number one spot.
**----**
**Stat of the day:** It is the first time in history that Australia have lost
consecutive home Tests by an innings.
**----**
**Tweet of the day:** [**@**][7]**[Vaughan][8][Cricket][7]** "Q: What do you
call an Australian with a champagne bottle in his hand. A: A waiter."
**----**
**Live it again: highlights from this morning's over-by-over blog:**
**WICKET! Siddle c Anderson b Swann 43 AUS 257/8 **Goooooooone! Siddle holes
out to deep mid-wicket! Swann just tosses it up on a length, Siddle tries to
hit him into the harbour, and picks out the safest pair of hands in the
outfield! It may have taken England 22 overs, which in terms of this series is
equivalent to roughly a week, but they've finally made the breakthrough! The
crosses of St George are flying at the SCG! England are two away!
**WICKET! Beer b Tremlett 2 AUS 281 all out **England win! That's the match,
and that's the series! It was on a good length from Tremlett, Beer went back
and played the ball onto his stumps! Within seconds, the England team were
charging towards each other in spasms of joy! What a moment! England have won
by an innings and 83 runs!
**01.27** That's the moment! England hold the Ashes urn aloft on Australian
soil for the first time in 24 years! It's so small! Strauss could surely crush
it in one of his broad, meaty hands. Instead, he clasps it between thumb and
forefinger, like a precious gem.

[The 20 best moments of the series][11]
**---- **
**What might happen next:** A sleepy England get trounced in the Twenty20s and
one-day series to take the gloss off their Ashes victory. This is then
compounded by a lacklustre performance at the World Cup, where they are bowled
out for 84 by Switzerland and fly home in disgrace. Andrew Strauss is sacked
as captain, dropped from the side, stripped of his OBE and sentenced to play
CB40 cricket for Middlesex for the rest of his life.
**...and what probably will: **The Queen makes a surprise appearance in
Canberra to personally knight every single member of the England squad,
including a bemused Ajmal Shahzad. Back home, cricket is variously declared
the 'new football', the 'new darts', the 'new iPad' and the 'new Justin
Bieber'. Kate Middleton breaks off her engagement to Prince William and
announces her intention to step down the aisle with Alastair Cook.
Unsurprisingly, Cook refuses to walk.
