# The Ashes 2010: what could retirement hold for Australia captain Ricky
Ponting?
## Victory at Perth has perked up Ricky Ponting, but time still appears to be
running out for him.

[Comments][2]
With Australia's recent overall record in Test and 50-over cricket
disappointing, and with his own batting form a worry - he has made only 83
runs in his six innings this series - his place was in doubt anyway. But now
the fracture to the little finger of his left hand makes his position even
more vulnerable.
If the 36 year-old does bow out after 151 Tests - and 12,333 runs, 39 100s and
an average of 53.85 - what might the future hold for him?
He doesn't strike me as the type to slip into the Channel 9 commentary box,
and they are already treble-parked in there, anyhow.
Former captains Richie Benaud, Mark Taylor, Ian Chappell and Bill Lawry are
all scrambling to get a word in edge ways alongside Ian Healy, Michael Slater
and Adam Gilchrist, and Poms Mark Nicholas and Tony Greig (well, he captained
**[England][3]** even though he was born in South Africa, and has lived in
**[Australia][4]** for the last 35 years or so).
Benaud may or may not retire to his house in the Cote d'Azur, but I don't see
Ponting moving in to replace him.

So maybe coaching? As the man who could still be the first Australian to lose
three Ashes series, he may well expect a certain amount of ribbing from his
young charges, although it should never be forgotten that he was/is a
fantastic batsman.
Steve Waugh was in the news last week for his comments about lie-detector
tests (in his role as a member of the MCC World Cricket Committee). He has not
gone down the commentary or coaching route, instead adopting an eclectic mix
of pursuits that include writing, photography, business and charity work.
There have even been rumours that he might run as a candidate for the
Australian Labor party.
Ponting could become a selector - Allan Border took that route from 1988
through to 2005 and did pretty well (until that final campaign in England).
Like Ponting and Border, Kim Hughes was also a fine player, but sadly he will
always be remembered for his tearful resignation from the captaincy in 1984,
and then his subsequent involvement in rebel tours to South Africa. He spent a
year as chairman of selectors for Western Australia, and has been a
commentator on the radio for ABC.
Greg Chappell coached India and has now resurfaced as Australia's full-time
selector, while Brian Booth tried his luck as Liberal candidate for the
Australian parliament, but lost his election.
Bob Simpson was a brilliant coach, who helped Border rebuild the discredited
Australia team that had lost to England in the 1986-87 Ashes.
Bill Woodfull became a maths teacher: adding up all those runs - 13,388 in
first-class cricket - came in handy.
Ian Craig forged a successful career with Boots the chemist, while Arthur
Morris joined another British firm, the engineering company George Wimpey. If
Ponting concedes the Ashes again, maybe a grateful British company could be
lined up. But it seems unlikely.
Let us hope Ponting avoids the fate of Clem Hill. He died when thrown from a
tram in Melbourne.
Post-playing days are unpredictable and not always happy. That is why Ponting
will be praying his finger heals so he can play at Melbourne and Sydney and
keep his Test career, and captaincy, alive.
