# The Ashes 2010: changing selector dynamic affecting Ricky Ponting's ability
to captain Australia

##  Ricky Ponting's standing as captain of Australia appears to be under
increasing threat from a changing dynamic within the Australian selection
panel.

The Australian captain has traditionally not had a formal say in selection but
Ponting's reputation as a player and a record of success better than any other
skipper in history used to ensure he was given the team he wanted.

But this week the selection of Michael Beer in the 12-man squad for this Test
shows those days are at an end.

Beer had never met Ponting before net practice on Monday and there is no doubt
that for such a crucial Test in his career he would have wanted familiar faces
around.

[Writing for _Telegraph Sport_,][7] Michael Vaughan likened the decision to
when England selected Darren Pattinson in his penultimate Test as captain.

That Beer did not make the final 11 makes little difference. Ponting is
traditionally a cautious captain who likes to have a balanced attack of three
quicks and a spinner.

So once the selectors decided Beer would not play it condemned Ponting to
marshal a bowling line-up picked as a first innings gamble, rather than one
built for a five day Test when a spinner could exploit a crumbling pitch.

The Channel 9 cameras picked up the moment David Boon, a selector, told
Ponting of the decision. Ponting appeared unhappy and walked away to give Beer
a consoling pat on the shoulder.

Beer's selection has been viewed in **[Australia][14]** as a left-field pick
by Greg Chappell, the newest member of the Australian selection panel.

Chappell pulled a similar stunt in the 1980s in his previous stint as a
selector when he plucked an obscure off-spinner called Peter Taylor from club
cricket to play in the 1986-87 **[Ashes][15]** series. That selection worked.

Taylor took eight wickets on his debut and went on to have a decent career.

Beer may yet make his debut at the MCG on Boxing Day but the selectors are in
a quandary. If they drop him from the squad after only bowling in the nets it
would be an admission they made a horrible mistake.

Chappell is the highest profile member of four-man Australian selection panel.
Its chairman, Andrew Hilditch, is a qualified solicitor renowned for a habit
of hooking Ian Botham down the throat of deep square leg when he was

Allan Border's vice-captain in the 1980s. Boon is fellow Tasmanian and a
strong supporter of Ponting's while Jamie Cox was a steady state batsman, and
another member of the Tasmanian mafia, who never played Test cricket.

Chappell replaced Merv Hughes in October and the gripe when he was removed
from the panel was that the selectors are now all former batsmen.

As all former bowlers are happy to say "what do batsmen know about bowling?"
Four bowlers and only one batsman has been dropped so far.

The sense Australian cricket is running headlong into a crisis of its own
making is growing gathering momentum. Hilditch is the panel chairman but
Chappell the spokesman which makes for confusing lines of communication.

Hilditch's contract ends after the World Cup in April and sources within
Cricket Australia have indicated that the selection panel may be streamlined
with Chappell taking on the role alongside running the development programme.

Cricket Australia are likely to launch a review of this year's Ashes series
similar to the Schofield Report commissioned by the **[England][16]** & Wales
Cricket Board following the whitewash of five years ago.

Changes to the selection panel are certain. The question is whether Ponting
will still be around to benefit.
