# The Ashes 2010: James Anderson left to rue missed single which ultimately
cost Paul Collingwood and England
## I would have preferred to reach the landmark in happier circumstances, but
getting my 200th Test wicket for England on Saturday was still a nice
milestone.

[Comments][5]
As early as I can remember I wanted to play cricket for Lancashire and
**[England][6]**, but I was a late developer and didn't play for Lancashire
Under-13s or 15s.
I watched Lancashire in numerous cup finals. I can remember going to Lord's in
1996 and watching them play Kent.
I wanted to follow the likes of Peter Martin -- because he was tall and fluent
-- and Glenn Chapple, because he ran in hard and swung the ball. Or perhaps I
should say he runs in hard, because he is still the Lancashire captain.
When I was growing up, I used to bat and bowl. I love batting and really enjoy
it but gave it up when I realised I could bowl reasonably quick.
When I reached 15 or so it all happened in a bit of a rush and I was soon
playing for Burnley 1st XI and Lancashire Under-17s.

Because I love batting I've been England's nightwatchman for several years
now.
You count down the balls and the minutes until the close of play. But I had to
go in with a couple of overs left after Jonathan Trott was out.
In the last over from Ryan Harris, the ball came off Paul Collingwood and went
about ten yards to the left of the keeper.
As he scampered round, I couldn't really judge whether there was a single or
not as I'd just come to the crease.
Perhaps there was a run there. There probably was in hindsight, but at the
time I thought I'd better not risk it.
And Colly came down the wicket and said, don't worry about it, I'll block the
last ball. Only it didn't turn out like that.
Overall I haven't felt any bad effects from flying home to see the birth of my
second child, my new daughter.
I got a bit of cramp on the first day which might have been due to the flight
home as I don't usually get cramp. But apart from that I've felt fine and been
sleeping well.
Our decision to bowl first was exactly right. I think **[Australia][13]**
would have bowled first too as the wicket was so grassy on the first morning
and they had picked four quick bowlers as well as Shane Watson.
If we are being ultra-critical, Australia got 30 or 40 too many in their first
innings. Then we made 60 or 70 too few in our first innings.
When Mitchell Johnson started to swing it, I think he took us a bit by
surprise.
I remember he swung a few at Headingley in 2009 and got a couple of lbws but
he hadn't swung it in the first Test at Brisbane.
In Australia's second innings I thought I bowled well at Watson with the new
ball and our analyst said I was generally about the same as in Adelaide. But I
did bowl a few sloppy balls down legside at the end of one long spell.
When I bowled with a 7-2 field I still felt I could bowl an inswinger. I
backed myself to hit off-stump and not bowl too straight.
The batsmen who have made runs on this wicket have been the ones who have left
the ball really well, like Watson and Mike Hussey, Andrew Strauss and Ian
Bell. They have stayed patient then they have hit the bad ball.
