# Shane Warne: Australia will win by pouncing on England's complacency in
third Ashes Test
## It has been a busy week but I am now looking forward to the cricket in
Perth, where I think Australia will win.

[Comments][5]
There is a lot at stake for **[Australia][6]** as a team and for individuals
but the aim is simple: they have to play positive cricket to stay in the
**[Ashes][7]** series.
Australia fell behind at Adelaide because they made some basic errors while
**[England][8]** played well. But if Australia go out and make 450 in their
first innings then it is game on.
To do that they have to grab their chances and it will be crucial to make sure
players are not worrying about their spots and just thinking for themselves.
Playing with freedom is the key.
They need to play the situation for the team. If that means scoring quick
runs, then go out and play some shots and do not worry about failure. If they
have to dig in for a while, then they have to play hard and concentrate.
It is about Australia. Not one person. They have to stay in the moment and not
think about the end result.

Australia have to make England stay out in the field for a long time and
cannot give them any lifelines, whether it is catches or run outs. All the
basic cricket skills you need to do well, Australia have to be completely in
top form.
Australia have got to give themselves a chance of winning this Test match. If
they lose, the Ashes are gone. If they draw, they have to win the last two,
which is a tough ask in Melbourne and Sydney.
England are playing good cricket and are confident but that is one thing the
Australians can play on. England think they are going to win this series
easily now.
They think the Australians have lost their aura and everything is going their
way. That is why Australia will come out and win.
Although England are playing well, Australia will fight. There have been so
many things happening to them in recent weeks and that will galvanise them.
They will seize on any complacency that may have crept into an England side
lauded for performing so well in Adelaide.
The first day is crucial in Perth and there might even be a case for bowling
first if you win the toss. Dismissing England cheaply on the first day would
open up the game and if Australia get a score on the board they could be in a
position to control the match.
They have a chance because I like the squad the selectors have picked for this
match. It has a lot of options with three seamers and two spinners plus Shane
Watson medium pace. Leg-spinner Steven Smith will be the sixth bowler in the
side. We will probably only see him in the second innings, but he could play a
role in the first innings. His job is to break partnerships rather than be the
guy to take four or five wickets and win the game.
Smith is a work in progress and, by his own admission, nowhere near the
finished article. He has been picked as a utility-type player who can do
everything and if he goes for a few runs, so what, as long as he takes a
wicket.
It takes a while to get used to the length in Perth. You need to bowl a bit
fuller than you normally would on any other pitch in Australia. That is one of
the reasons why Mitchell Johnson will come back in. He knows how to bowl in
Perth conditions.
Ben Hilfenhaus might get the nod ahead of Peter Siddle because he can bowl in
the breeze and do some donkey work. He can swing it into the wind. It would be
hard luck on Siddle. He took a six-wicket haul and a hat-trick one Test match
ago which isn't bad.
After the Adelaide Test, I recommended in this newspaper the name of Michael
Beer and it was great that the selectors read the piece!
What I like about Frosty, as he is nicknamed, is that when we played club
cricket together for St Kilda he had a great temperament and was feisty. He
wanted the ball in his hands in the tough situations and was a bit of a sponge
when it came to soaking up information.
He was always asking questions about fields and how to take wickets. I have
worked with him a bit since I retired and have really enjoyed seeing him
progress.
I pushed the Victoria selectors to pick him and they made a mistake not
playing him. I spoke to Tom Moody when he was coach at Western Australia and
gave Beer a good recommendation.
He has been playing in Perth all season and knows the wicket and how to bowl
at the Waca. He has adjusted well because he is a quick learner.
He will be nervous about the Test match and he doesn't know half the team, so
it is a tough one for him, but by the end of the Test people will remember the
name Michael Beer.
He can turn it and get bounce and he might just sneak up on the English.
They played him earlier in the tour and may think he is just a run-of-the-mill
left-arm spinner, but he is better than that, which is why he is playing for
Australia. It is a bit of a left-field selection but it is a good move and he
will do well.
I feel a bit for Xavier Doherty. He was in a tough situation in his first two
Tests playing in a side who were always behind in the match and against an
England team playing well. It is a good time to be a young spinner when your
team are 400 ahead and England are chasing the game, but he never got in that
situation.
Hopefully, it will be different for Beer and he will get a prolonged chance if
he shows something. That would help him have a nice career for Australia.
Our mantra at St Kilda Cricket Club is not to get pushed around on the field.
You own the turf. He will hold his own and not get overawed.
