# England's safety at the 2011 Cricket World Cup is under threat, warns
security expert
## England's safety at next year's World Cup in Asia, and that of the 13
other national teams, will be put at risk from terrorist attacks unless there
is a sudden and major change of strategy, a security expert has warned.

The current proposal is for the 14 World Cup teams to travel in ordinary buses
from airport to hotel to ground in the three countries hosting the tournament
- India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh - in February and March. An armed local
police officer is due to be on board each bus, which will be accompanied by
escort vehicles.
In the light of the terrorist attack in Lahore in March 2009, when gunmen
killed eight people and injured several of Sri Lanka's Test cricketers after
bullets pierced their bus, such arrangements are "hopelessly inadequate", says
the expert, who is calling for bomb-resistant buses to be provided, at a cost
of between £290,000 and £330,000 each.
To stage the World Cup, the organisers have been given £84 million by the
International Cricket Council. Providing the relative security of bomb-
resistant buses would cost an estimated £4.2 million, or five per cent of
their total budget.
Before the Lahore attack, the perception was that sportsmen in Asia, and
particularly cricketers, would never be threatened by terrorists. That theory
died with the eight victims in Lahore.
It is understood that the greatest fear of World Cup security advisers is of
an attack on a team in transit by road. Promises by organisers to clear roads
for team buses in the three host countries are not regarded as reliable.

In addition to the attack directly on Sri Lanka's cricketers in Lahore,
terrorists struck in November 2008 at the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai, where
officials and players were gathering for the inaugural Champions League, which
had to be cancelled.
Earlier this year a bomb went off at the stadium in Bangalore where an Indian
Premier League match was about to be staged. The players, including Kevin
Pietersen, were assured that the ground was safe before the game went ahead,
but more bombs were found in the stadium after the match.
Bomb-resistant buses were considered by IPL officials for the eight teams in
this year's competition, but not in time for them to be delivered.
