# The Ashes 2010: England's Kevin Pietersen sees dividends for keeping the
faith with double century in Adelaide

##  Kevin Pietersen said he had endured tough times over the past 18 months
and the relief when he reached his century and double hundred today was there
for all to see.

[**Pietersen**][7]'s unbeaten 213 was his first three figure score in Test
cricket for [**England**][8] for 19 months, a lean period which led to him
being dropped from the one-day team at the end of last summer.

England will be hoping this is a career defining innings for Pietersen and
finally puts to bed a dismal period which began with his dismissal as captain
nearly two years ago.

"It has not been the best time," he said. "You go through your career and have
good stuff and bad stuff. I have had a lot of good stuff fortunately but a
little bit of bad stuff. Fortunately that has gone now and I look forward.

"I love the big occasion and challenging myself against the best players in
the world. It has been pretty tough over the last 18 months and this is a
challenge for me to really look forward to and I love the fact it is going so
well out here. I set myself high standards.

"To get 80, 90, 99s or 50 and 60s does my head in. It was great when that ball
went down to fine leg [to bring up his century] but the state of game was one
where someone had to continue playing with a level head and we know we needed
to carry on and make sure today was a day where we batted all day to put us in
a great position to win this Test match."

Pietersen had to watch for almost a combined 11 hours before getting to the
crease following Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott's two partnerships at the
Gabba and here on Saturday. For a man who is a bundle of nervous energy, the
wait was agonising.

"I found it more tiring waiting to bat than batting for this long today," he
said. "You can probably see by way I started that I was trying to get to 50 in
five balls. It was a long time to wait. I have never done that in my career
before but it is brilliant to watch others and long may it continue that all
our batters are in nick. We will win a lot of matches if our batters stay in
nick like this."

[**Australia**][15] are now left praying for rain, an event that is so rare in
Adelaide that Ian Chappell believes he only seen two days lost to the elements
here in 25 years.

"We will now see what we are made of," said Ricky Ponting. "They have showed
us how to bat and so far their skills and execution have been terrific. We
have to emulate that and keep ourselves in the game.

"Is it a confidence or morale problem? It is a bit of everything. We have been
outplayed for the last four or five days of Test cricket and we have to learn
from that."
