# The Ashes 2010: Australia shocked at Michael Clarke's apology on Twitter for
not walking in Adelaide Test
## When Michael Clarke posted his online message, the Twitter community
reacted with shock and surprise that an Australian cricketer should have
apologised for walking.

not walking][1]
Walk the walk: Australia vice-captain Michael Clarke was eventually given out
on the final ball of the day in Adelaide, after the decision was referred

The consensus was that Clarke might as well say sorry for having blond hair,
as contempt for walking is written into the DNA of every Australian batsman
(with the exception of the saintly Adam Gilchrist).
It was Barry Richards who coined the stock one-liner on the issue. "The only
time an Australian walks is when his car runs out of petrol," said Richards, a
vital part of the great 1969-70 South African side who thumped the Aussies
4-0.
In fact, it was on that tour that the modern Australian attitude was cemented.
During the third Test, a young Ian Chappell drove a low catch to 'Tiger' Lance
at point. No one was quite sure whether the ball had carried, and the umpire
was reluctant to make a decision, so Chappell asked Lance directly if he had
caught the ball. When he received the answer "Yes", he walked straight back to
the pavilion.
"Chappell asked me if I'd caught it," the duplicitous Lance told his team-
mates later. "He didn't ask me how many times it bounced before I caught it."
When this got back to Chappell, he vowed never to pre-empt the umpire's
decision again. And he transmitted this attitude to the wild-haired hooligans
who came under his captaincy from the early 1970s onwards.

Chappell's position does at least have the virtue of being philosophically
consistent. When batsmen start giving themselves out, however, decision-making
can become alarmingly complicated.
Take Colin Cowdrey, the great English stylist of the 1950s, who is alleged to
have been a selective walker.
Most of the time, he marched straight off, but if he got a particularly thin
edge, and if the game was in the balance, it was said that he would stand his
ground. He would rarely be given out in such circumstances, as most of the
umpires trusted him implicitly.
More recently, Gilchrist and Brian Lara were both confirmed walkers. In both
cases, their positions caused as many problems as they solved.
When Lara received a stinker of a bat-pad decision at Lord's, he put out a
statement saying: "I find it impossible not to walk when I am out." This made
the unfortunate umpire (the ever-erratic Daryl Harper) look even more stupid
than he already did.
As for Gilchrist, he wrote in his autobiography that he received "zero
support" in the Australian dressing-room, and that his team-mates made him
feel selfish for pursuing his crusade. One can see their point. A batsman's
wicket belongs to the team as much as it does to the individual, so having a
walker in your side puts the whole XI at a disadvantage.
The ethics of walking will eventually change under the influence of TV
reviews. But only when the system is foolproof. For the moment, it still makes
sense to wait for the umpire's decision. So, thanks Mr Clarke, but your
apology really was not necessary.
**Those who walk… **
**Colin Cowdrey**
Has such a reputation for fair play that the MCC named their annual "Spirit of
Cricket" lecture after him. However, some contemporaries argue that Cowdrey
could be pragmatic when circumstances demanded it.
**Adam Gilchrist**
Not everyone was impressed. "You see the way Gilly throws the ball in the
air," said the Kiwi opener Mark Richardson. "He tends to play on his walking,
his honesty, but he still tries to burgle anyone and everyone."
**…and those who don't**
**Ian Chappell**
"Let the umpire do the umpiring" was Chappell's watchword, and he would
verbally abuse any batsman who tried waving his bat to signal that he had got
an inside-edge onto his pad. ** **
**Mike Atherton**
One of his greatest innings for England came after he had blatantly gloved
Allan Donald to the keeper at Trent Bridge in 1998. Donald later acknowledged
that Atherton had been within his rights to stay put.
