# Lewis Hamilton gets back on track as Formula One season starts its engines
|
|
|
|
## Lewis Hamilton will strap himself into the cockpit of a Formula One car for
|
|
the first time since snatching the world drivers' title in such dramatic
|
|
fashion at Interlagos last November when he takes his new-look MP4-24 for a
|
|
spin around the Algarve Motor Park on Wednesday.

As in Brazil, Hamilton may well have to battle the elements as well as the
|
|
clock. The first two days of testing here in southern Portugal have been
|
|
hampered by treacherous conditions on track, with hail and sleet sending the
|
|
cars fleeing for cover at regular intervals.
|
|
|
|
As a precautionary measure, McLaren have thus far opted to send test driver
|
|
Pedro de la Rosa out with a 2008 rear wing to increase his downforce, while
|
|
other major changes for this season, such as slick tyres and the controversial
|
|
Kinetic Energy Recovery System, have remained firmly in the garage.
|
|
|
|
The team said on Tuesday it was highly unlikely Hamilton would run with KERS
|
|
on Wednesday.
|
|
|
|
Toyota, though, are running the system, despite being vehemently opposed to
|
|
it, and they conceded yesterday that they had to step up their game this
|
|
season or their Japanese backers might well follow Honda out of the sport.
|
|
|
|
"If we have a weak season we have no future," team president John Howett said.
|
|
"Whether we really have to win [a first ever grand prix] to stay in the sport
|
|
is difficult to say, but we need to demonstrate to Toyota that we are value to
|
|
the corporation for the commitment they are and have made."
|

On the other side of the Iberian peninsula, BMW Sauber on Tuesday unveiled
|
|
their new F1.09, with Pole Robert Kubica putting the car through its initial
|
|
paces.
|
|
|
|
"Quite a lot of effort and resources went into the 2009 car in the second half
|
|
of the season, so of course I'm hoping that will pay off with the F1.09," said
|
|
Kubica, a rising star of F1 who led the drivers' championship at the midway
|
|
point last season and was hugely critical of BMW's decision to switch their
|
|
attentions to 2009.
