The fourth generation of BMW's open-topped M3, the first to have a folding
|
|
metal roof. Like the M3 Saloon and Coupe, it has a 3,999cc V8 petrol engine
|
|
developing 420bhp (that's 105bhp per litre) at 8,300rpm and 295lb ft of torque
|
|
at 3,900rpm. The new M3 ConvertibleÕs engine develops more than twice the
|
|
power of the original, delivering 420hp at 8,300rpm and 400Nm of torque at
|
|
3,900rpm from its 3,999cc V8-power unit.
|
|
|
|
As you'd expect, performance is mighty: 155mph top speed (electronically
|
|
limited) and 0-62mph in 5.3sec. The M3 Convertible also heralds the debut of
|
|
BMWÕs new seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) as a £2,590 option
|
|
to the standard six-speed manual gearbox and variable M differential, which
|
|
sends up to 100 per cent of available power to the rear wheel with the most
|
|
grip. With BMW's Efficient Dynamics (brake energy regeneration and weight
|
|
reduction), the EU Combined economy is 21.9mpg. Flared wheel arches house 18in
|
|
double-spoke light-alloy wheels, with 19in rims optional.

**We don't like:** Uncouth engine note, scary handling when pressing on, lack
|
|
of steering feedback, carbon-fibre roof, image as a drug dealers' car, 11mpg
|
|
average.
