A new 5.-0-litre supercharged V8 petrol engine producing 510bhp and 461lb of
|
|
torque steals the show on the new Range Rover_._
|
|
|
|
It's man enough to whisk the big off-roader from 0-60mph in only 5.9 seconds
|
|
and on to a top speed of 140mph, using six-speed automatic transmission and -
|
|
of course - permanent all-wheel drive.

Fuel consumption is claimed to be improved by 7.3 per cent despite the
|
|
increase in power over its 4.2-litre supercharged predecessor. The diesel
|
|
version continues to be powered by the 3.6-litre TDV8.
|
|
|
|
Outside, the newcomer takes on styling cues from the Discovery-based Range
|
|
Rover Sport, including a new front end incorporating more brightwork and a
|
|
redesigned grille, along with new wing vents and revised tail lamps.
|
|
|
|
Inside, Land Rover claims to have simplified the switchgear while the
|
|
instrument binnacle now incorporates a Thin Film Transistor screen, replacing
|
|
conventional analogue dials with facsimile analogue dials. The new technology
|
|
allows passenger and driver to view different images simultaneously. It means
|
|
the driver can check the sat-nav, for instance, while the passenger enjoys a
|
|
film.
|
|
|
|
Other clever new technology includes five external camera lenses allowing the
|
|
driver to receive a wealth of information about potential hazards via the TFT
|
|
screen while off-roading, towing or just parking.
|
|
|
|
New "high beam assist technology" automatically switches on the high beam
|
|
headlamps when external light levels are low. The system also detects traffic
|
|
ahead, automatically switching back to low beam to avoid dazzling other
|
|
drivers.
|
|
|
|
**The verdict:** More bling than before but also faster, more frugal, less
|
|
polluting and remarkably competent off-road.
