principal words in the title (The British national anthem is God Save the
Queen).

National Farmers' Union
National Lottery is now Lotto.
National Trust: a gift to the NT is not strictly a gift a to the nation, so
should not be described as such.
nationalists: cap only in references to parties which use the word in their
titles and to their members. The Scottish National party has nationalist views
and Scottish Nationalist candidates. Lower-case loyalists and republicans.
natives (for inhabitants) can offend.
nativity for the birth of Jesus.
Nato
NatWest: main bank or subsidiary (National Westminster Bank at first mention).
nearby in all uses.
negro, negress: do not use except in a clearly-explained historical context.
Neil, Andrew
Neo-con is becoming rather tired. Use it only if you are going to show what it
means.
Neptune/Pluto: Neptune is temporarily the Sun's most distant planet. Pluto's
eccentric orbit has brought it closer than Neptune. Pluto will return to its
usual, more distant orbit in the year 2113.
nerve-racking.
Network Rail: owns and operates all Britain's rail infrastructure.
nevertheless
new: appears more frequently than it should. It is needed sometimes but most
readers would like to think that the plans, policies, inquiries we are telling
them about are by definition new.
Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle-under-Lyme
New College, Oxford: do not omit college.
newspaper: always thus, never just "paper".
newspaper proprietors: all references MUST be cleared with the editor or
acting editor before appearing in the paper.
Newspaper Publishers Association: No apostrophe.
newspaper quotations: when reporting what foreign publications say, always
indicate their political affiliations and how much authority they carry.
newspaper titles: are italicised and take the article if it is in their own
masthead: i.e. _The Guardian_, _The Times_, _The Daily Telegraph_, _The
Express_ etc but... _Daily Mail_, _Evening Standard_. Cap the "L" in the
definite article in French titles (_Le Monde_); do not use "the" before the
titles of foreign newspapers that include an article in their name (_Die
Welt_). The suffixes -et or -en in Scandinavian titles are equivalent to
"the".
New Year: caps for the festival (New Year's Day, New Year's Eve) but lower
case for new year meaning the period about to begin.
Nicholson, Jack, but Nicolson, Harold, Nigel, Adam and Rebecca.
Nineteen Eighty-Four: the novel.
nitrobenzene: not -ine.
No: No 10 Downing Street, No 10: avoid elsewhere.
nom de plume is bad French. They would say nom de guerre.
none must be followed by a singular verb and singular pronoun: none of them
was admitted to the room. None of them concede that they made mistakes is
wrong, but such forms are used to avoid the clumsy "he or she". It can also be
avoided by writing "none of them concedes that mistakes were made".
none the less
no one
notwithstanding
now: use only to draw the distinction between past/future and present,
otherwise the word is redundant.
number is always plural, despite being a singular noun: one would not say "a
number of us is going to the pub". The same logic applies to other nouns
describing a plurality, such as majority and minority: "a minority of doctors
are alcoholics".
numbers: Except in the Business pages, the numbers one to nine are spelt out,
after that they are given as numerals.
numskull: no b
