jargon: the word is often misused as a reproachful description of terms that
are properly used by experts to achieve precision and brevity. When such terms
are adopted into newspaper copy, in, for instance, a report on a space flight,
they must be explained at first mention. They do not need quotation marks. Do

Various people who are professionally untrained sing arias from operas to a
mass audience. They are not opera singers. They are popular entertainers. Our
readers know the difference.
job titles: Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, not Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
The titles of professional posts require the definite article: so it is "John
Smith, the chairman of Smith", not "John Smith, chairman of Smith".
Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore: not John Hopkins.
joyrider: not an ideal term for a person who steals a car in order to get a
thrill from driving it about, but the best anyone has come up with and
instantly recognisable to the reader. Avoid if possible.
