# Liberia 20 years on: five civilians share their memories of conflict
|
|
|
|
## On its long road to recovery from the scars of fourteen years of civil
|
|
war, Liberia's government has this week taken back responsibility for running
|
|
its hospitals from aid agencies after two decades.

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has provided medical aid in Liberia since 1990.
|
|
The handover of its last hospital this week is the most significant reduction
|
|
of the agency's activities in the country since before the war.
|
|
|
|
While law and order was restored following the end of the war in 2003 and
|
|
subsequent [**elections in 2005**][1], emergency medical aide has been
|
|
provided by external aid agencies since 1990.
|
|
|
|
There are currently less than 100 doctors in a country of 3.6 million.
|
|
|
|
Longer term support rather than emergency aid is now needed, an MSF spokesman
|
|
said. From July, MSF will remain in the country to help provide free medical
|
|
and psychological care to survivors of sexual violence.
|
|
|
|
During Liberia's civil war, rape was extremely widespread and has [**remained
|
|
high following the conflict**][2]. In 2009 it was the second most frequently
|
|
reported serious crimes in Liberia, after armed robbery.

More than 250,000 people - mostly civilians - died during the conflict between
|
|
government forces and the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL), an
|
|
opposition group led by former government official Charles Taylor who is
|
|
currently [**on trial for war crimes**][6].
