# Midge trap offers hope in Highlands
By Tara Womersley 12:00AM BST 01 Aug 2000
ATTACKS from midges in the Scottish Highlands could soon be on the decline if
a machine that imitates human breath proves successful.
The summertime scourge of midges has been blamed for keeping tourists at bay
as well as a loss of working days outside. The £450 machine, originally
intended for American mosquitoes, mimics a human by emitting heat, moisture
and carbon dioxide after converting propane from a 20lb tank.
Known as the Mosquito Magnet, it traps the midges and manufacturers claim it
can clear an acre in little more than a month. Karen Salvatore, sales manager
at American Biophysics in Rhode Island, said it had proved a success in other
countries with midge problems. She said: "We have been deluged by orders and
will be focusing on Europe next year.
"We can effectively help the people of Scotland as we have already helped out
in other countries with serious midge problems." Bill Fulton, chairman of
Highlands Council protective services, said he would monitor the effectiveness
of the machine. He said: "If they had a midge problem in London they would
have been eradicated years ago."
