# Silverstone gets 27m makeover ahead of British Grand Prix

## Drivers and motorsport legends head to Silverstone as it opens new pits

and a media complex two months before the British F1 Grand Prix.

Measuring 390 metres in length and featuring 41 garages, a race control
|
|
building, media centre, hospitality and VIP spectator zones, the Silverstone
|
|
Wing is the culmination of years of bitter negotiations between the British
|
|
Racing Drivers' Club, which owns the former Second World War airfield in
|
|
Northamptonshire, and [**Formula One**][2] chief executive Bernie Ecclestone.
|
|
|
|
The BRDC's courage in committing the required sums -- this is phase two of a
|
|
multi-million pound facelift -- was rewarded with a 17-year deal from Mr
|
|
Ecclestone.
|
|
|
|
Five of Britain's six living Formula One world champions -- John Surtees, Sir
|
|
Jackie Stewart, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill and Jenson Button -- were in
|
|
attendance, along with luminaries such as Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Frank
|
|
Williams and former commentator Murray Walker.
